Yes
I know this isn't strictly a film and conventional question but I figure I'm more likely to get an answer from the folk on here.

So, leatherette, where do I get it from? I've checked on ebay but there's loads of different types most of it seems to be for upholstery which I assume will be way too thick.

So TP'rs share your knowledge.

Hi,

I work in the automotive industry, we use Leatherette on a lot of the car parts that are produced for the various car companies we supply to. What colour and thickness leatherette material are you after?

Michael.

Nick there is a whole lot of real leather sheets lying with me - from the days we used to sell leather in UK. If you need any, let me know....

Hi Michael,

I'm not really sure on thickness, it's for recovering an old 60's camera, so it'll have to be fairly thin. As for colour anything would do.

This lot do loads of leather both normal and coloured, their US based but from reading around the web their stuff appears to be good.

Worth a look around if nothing else.

Thanks Ujjwal, do you know how thick it is?

I don't actually know how thick it should be. I can only assume going from the leatherette in most cameras that it's going to be fairly thin.

OK, I'll get a few samples ( small pieces..) and if you like any, I'll get you a big piece.....

Thanks Ujjwal, there's no rush so I'll bring the camera with me next time we meet up.

It's only a cheapy Halina Paulette, it's a bit of a mess. Ebay purchase where the pics don't match the camera :bang: But I'm going to take it apart see how it works and then try and make it look nice if it still works :D

So your are going to take 'one Paulette' apart, eh Nick. Just because she is cheap, doesn't mean she can't perform...:D

Aurther has done lots of recovering I think, he will know the thickness you need. The leatherette on my Bronica is peeling away, I'm sorely tempted to customise it.

Nick,

I have managed to source 4 samples of leatherette in different colours which I can send off to you. The material I have is around 2-3mm in thickness. If you PM your address I can send you the samples for you to look at so you can decide for yourself if it's suitable for your needs. To adhere the material we use a special heat activated 2 part bonding glue called Jowat which uses a crosslinking agent to activate it however I'm sure a strong tacky adhesive will stick the leatherette just fine.

Michael.

Type in google bookbinding with rexine

You should find a supplier that will send you a sample or two.

Rexine is far thinner and doesnt mark as leather

I know a very nice man that makes stuff with leather... I am sure he could be convinced that camera cases are a worthwhile pastime... given the leather that is. Anyone likely to want me to get in touch with him? Thinking about that scary xPan case price a while back here more than anything else.

Aurther - (hee hee)

PS - yes, I have done a fair bit., Get mine from a haberdashers at about £4 per half metre - right now I have champagne and chocolate brown - used up all the black. Contact adhesive is good. I can send you enough for the Paulette if you want Nick?

Hmm. Just heard back and he can't do the moulding (thumb bits) but i reckon I could convince him that a few xPan-sized half cases would be a neat idea... but would it? I could do the patterns for him I think...

indeed it would. Whats moulding thing? Is it machine made or hand made. I can ask around in India, they have all sorts of machines....

Sorry for the delay Michael I have been away for the weekend.
Thanks for the offer but I think 2-3mm is going to be too thick, the leatherette on the Halina is almost paper thin.

That would be great Arthur, I think it would look very nice in champagne:D

I think the laydees will love my Bronica even more once I've covered it in purple leatherette.

You're right Ali, needs more thought for a full on pimping though. Wonder if I can get the WLF and winding handle chromed?

Do they sell them in the TP shop? I once covered the seat of one of my motorbikes in fake cow print fur material. Looked great but kept sliding around on it, not good mid corner.

Can you pm your address again Nick - got a couple of cameras to return as well

You're a star Arthur. i hope you're keeping one for yourself

No - got too many here and I'd never get away with it! Will send them both back to you to play with.

Arthur

Those are away then... one thing I want to say while on the leatherette subject though, something which caught me out big time.

When you buy your leatherette, *make sure the backing is the same colour as the leatherette* because it will show around the edges and you really do not want to be messing about with trying to match colours and felt-tip pens!

Wise words indeed Arthur, do you have recommendations for adhesive?

For me, general purpose Evostik is good, contact adhesive better but you gotta be sure when you let go... and for simple re-attaching of panels not actually parted from the camera I use cyano (superglue) plain and simple - saves having odd bumps underneath.

Thanks Arthur, parcel arrived this morning as I was heading out of the door. Looking forward to getting home and having a play :D

Cool - that means another two films run off then  As I said, I cannot check shutter speeds but they both sound about right now. You may owe me a beer for the postage though
