I’m getting an X-T3 and want to be able to throw it in my bad without worrying too much about it. Also want it to be easily accessible. I’m looking at those leather cases that cover the bottom of the camera. Fujifilm has their own which looks nice. Has anyone used something like this? And does it actually provide any protection or does it’s just add bulk and make it look cooler?

They do tend to get a lot of scuffs on the bottom but who cares really.
I think it will be too annoying and bulky - not worth it usually.
Some kind of screw on base plate might be a lot more useful and cost less.

Back in the days of film, they were sometimes called "never-ready" cases. Mind you, those were the half cases with covers for the top 1/2 attached.

Had an expensive one that came with an old X-10 Fuji compact - the baseplate was quite thick and I couldn't get the SD card out of the camera without removing the 1/2 cover! Looked lovely though. IIRC it was a Gariz case.

Quite a few of us Sony Alpha users have PU half cases on our cameras. It makes the camera a little easier to grip and protects it from scuffing, so for the small cost it seems a useful thing.

I have a cheap eBay pretend leather case for my Sony ( less than £10 and nicely padded) I have the full case on in transit and take the top off when in use ( just press studs) Best of both worlds. Can be put on a tripod without removing the case.

Maybe I just need to be less precious about the camera! Kevin Mullins famously doesn’t even use dividers for his Fuji gear and just lets his x100v, X-T4, lenses etc rattle around in the bag!

I doubt people will be buying any used kit off him then unless it's priced according to its battered condition :D

And there's always the chance that when pulling something out of the bag bits that you need to take a picture may fall off. Not looking after gear when it's so easy to do just seem utterly daft to me, but each to their own.

...and never was a device more aptly renamed! :naughty:

I still have one case, which came with a Kiev. It does keep the dust out but if I was going to put film in that camera, the case would be left at home.

Although cases can (and do) protect your equipment from knocks and scratches, they can actually cause other problems.

They can cause wear in places that you can't see until you take the case off and any trapped dust, grit (especially sand) can rub and cause scratches.

I've not used one for over thirty years now, but if you decided to get one I would advise you take it off regularly to make sure nothing is getting trapped inside.

I think he keeps a lot of his gear. He’s got a good photo of his X100, x100S x100T x100F and X100V stacked on top of each other!

Whoever he is IMO putting cameras and lenses in a bag and letting them "rattle around" is nothing short of idiotic as apart from potentially causing cosmetic damage this could cause a camera or lens to be damaged in a way that matters when it needs to be used.

All just my VHO of course but when it's so easy and relatively cheap to protect gear why take the gamble and just let it rattle around?

He’s a pretty good photographer - shooting weddings for like, 15 years or something and clearly had no issues - fujifilm ambassador too. He says they’re ‘tools not jewels’. I think it’s refreshing. I certainly molly-coddle my gear a bit too much. I think he looks after his GFX a bit better….

I think he's either faking for youtube clicks or he's a shoddy, careless tool user - if the facts are as presented. The chances of a lens cap being knocked off and the surface of the front element scratched are quite substantial in a bag full of loose lenses, and the flare that could cause would really sod up someone's wedding photos.

He’s a pretty down-to-Earth Welshman and often talks of his dislike of clickbail so I doubt it’s the former. Careless? Possibly! But I imagined if it has ever cause a problem like you mention he would have changed. Don’t know. People talk about the importance of ‘professional build quality’ and then wrap them up in cotton wool. I’m with the Cotton Wool crowd myself, but I do like KM and listen to his podcast a lot, which is why I’m defending him! :D

They are good.

It protects scratches at the bottom, if you drop it, there is protection should it hand bottom down. It adds more grip for the pinky.

I actually bought it because the Sony is too short for my hands, my pinky has nowhere to go.

Why not use a base plate? It’s useful as well as protective. Lim’s in Korea make the best quality cases. Expensive but better than the rubbish Chinese stuff
