Learning the basics in Photoshop...am i on the right track?

Hi all,

After reading some tips on here i have been fiddling around in Photoshop to see if i can improve some old photos.

I've got a Canon 40d on order but this photo was taken last year on a tiny little Ixus 55 point and shoot.

I just want to know if what i've done to 'improve' the photo is on the right track as I would like to follow a similar track when i get my new camera.

Be careful with the highlights - you've got some burnt out areas in there...
 
Agreed I think that I would apply a touch more sharpening and raise the Gamma half a notch rather than brighten the image as it is starting to "blow out" the highlights

bit too much brightness, the shorts and shirt are too bright

corners are a bit dark?

you'll get loads more help around here if you allow others to copy & edit your photos (its a tick box at the bottom of your user profile), they'll post them back to show suggested improvements
 
i've changed the options now so hopefully people can. The dark corners are because of the camera - cheap point and click for you! I presume when people say that areas are burnt out they are relating to the tshirt and shorts. Like i say i am trying to learn and not really sure what 'burnt out highlights' actually means!
 
the first one looked perfect to me ?
 
I also preferred the first pic. Looks like a nice spot. Where is it?

No definitely not. I guess my 'skills' are just bad to plain awful :(

Well here are some more i did a few night ago...all from my round the world trip. Probably ruined them all - if that's the case then at least i know to leave photo's alone and just accept them as they are :)

i think the hut pic is spot on amazing what a little ps can do
