When I started out the NL paper said they dont accept anyhting on spec or midweek games. so was commisions only.... this was many years ago...

Has anyone sent anyhting on spec to either and got used?
 
Had plenty commissioned from them int he past and sent stuff in after and had a couple of usages, they were strange stories to be honest however, a goalkeeperer scoring and a story after Bedlington Terriers rich owner walked away

Never had anything commissioned from the FL paper and had stuff sent, had a cover there

It does work but can be few and far between

Worth sending on the off chance though I guess
 
yeagh commisioned... did burton sat... I get them OK ... just somehting someone said... I may as well add them to the papers email list.. makes no difference to me when sending... you never know... cheers :)
 
I do stuff for them on commission. I think the paper is laid out well in advance based around which games they have commissioned. Have had spec stuff used on features but never match reports, as they will always use something from the commissioned snapper.
 
I also heard it's all on commission.

So with your record I can't a reason why they wouldn't commission you when you were doing a game they wanted covering.

As I say.. I do get commisions off them... but only if action images arnt booked to cover the same game.. presumably they offer a cheaper block booking deal... however they dont have pictures for every game.. suppose somehting exciting happens at a game they wernt going to feature.. and the game they where featuring is boring... thinking they might take a pic or 2 then.. if they care...
 
Oh gosh no idea. I can only think to have a chat with them and see. I'd be interested to know though.
 
FL paper will use AI then Media Images and Pinacle and may commison other games if they cant get coverage from thoese listed
eg if they want stanley and the above are not covering tony will get the nod if you get my drift

exactly.. they know me and use me (but only rare as in above scenario) .. just dont seem right that someone from these other agencies come along when i am already there... I wont travel to a game for 50 quid and they must be doing it even cheaper to be higher up the list.. they use me maybe 2 times a season.. I suppose the fact accringotn are doing so badly doesnt help.. but this sat they are playing top of league.. I asked FLP and didnt even get a response... presumably one of those agencies will be there.. travel to the game and do it cheaper than 50 quid...

I only twigged the the images in there from the Burton game were yours after reading this thread.
 
Worked for them regularly for nearly three seasons but end of last I couldn't cover a couple and they seem to fall out with me. This season I've only done one game the other week as they claim they have had most covered. Don't really get on with them since the last staff change but hav'nt missed the work as had other jobs at weekends.

Just to answer the original question they wont accept images from any game unless its featured BUT there are the odd exceptions as they've phone me and asked if I did the game. I have done the odd game for someone else such as cup replay etc and I've contacted them and had a couple used but rates are really poor. I've also done the odd Fri evening game but had to contact them first and usually get a commission.
 
They always stick to commissions as far as I'am aware probably works out cheaper for them and less hassle overall, Always seem to get on well with them and get a couple a month on average.

get in touch with the non league paper.. show then what you can do (link).. tell them where you usualy go or the area you can go.. ask them if they need anything... however nl footy is pretty flooded.. nearly every team has a photogrpaher nowerdays..

Ahh right, this is what i thought i had to do but just needed to confirm it. I have only sent images in to the Borehamwood times for exapmle and i managed to get some published but got no money just credit.

I Photograph Borehamwood Fc currently and the reason why is because they dont have a photographer, so i'll give that a try and see what happens.

oh dear :( you will upset a lot of people saying that.. especialy anyone who works as a photogrpaher in your area who wont appreciate you giving pictures away... then theres all the sports pros who will take the hump.. however we all ahave to learn ( i know I had to) so please take this as constructive... you will lose friends and get yourself a really bad name in sports photogrpahy if you give your pics away for credit.. I am not preachign here.. just advising... the paper you gave the pics to are making money.. everyone associated wiht it.. even the kid delivering it gets paid... your pics probably take up as much room if not more than the report.. everyones making money and your pictures help them... you should be paid..if not you then someone else..

I was aware that it probably would upset people, although it was my first pictures published and simply didnt want to sound demanding asking for money and i'm also not too sure how to. I absolutely agree with the last part of your message and thats kind of hit home that i should actually start asking for money as well as credit.

So what exactly do i say when emailing the paper and asking for money as i am only really just starting out as you may have already guessed, i'd love to and want to make money form my pictures so if you could give me some tips i'd greatly appreciate that.

You should ahve all the details in the IPTC of the picture.. if thats lost you then do a quick search on these forums.. its all here :)

But as a quick pointer.. you basically tell any LOCAL newspaper that you will accept there standard rate but no free usage... they will then pay you what they pay anyone else... they wont try paying you less as you already told them standard rate... thats if your dealing personally wiht the paper.. either way you do need all the info in the IPTC for lots of reasons.. re usage at later date being the biggest one :)

Right ok, i'll give that a go next time i contact the newspaper.

As far as the IPTC goes i've so far not come across it so i'm not sure what is?
 
IPTC is information embedded in the picture.. this includes a caption (description of whats in the pic) copyright details. your details and more.. search or google.. any picture provided to newspapers on a serious basis should ahve these filled in for your own protection and it helps you and the paper..
