Off we go again starting in Copenhagen with a ahort time trial
Looks like an interesting route this year and a good section of cobbles on stage 5

Hope its a good close race with no serious injuries or drug scandals.

I enjoyed Eurosport’s coverage of the Giro so much this year that I’m torn as to which channel to watch it on.

Bahrain Victorius has been raided twice in a week so not optomistic.

Prefer David Millar and Ned Boultin as comentators.

yep just started my 1 month eurosport

Been a subscriber for a few years now, don't miss the ad breaks at all, plus the coverage of all the other races.
The thing I like about the cycling is the winners are so difficult to predict, todays stage being a prime example, Yves Lampart who would have guessed.

I saw this the other day from BT Sport.
Don't think it applies to me, I only access BT Sport via their app on my TV

Eurosport is now included in our Sport and VIP packages at no extra cost, which means even more sporting action including the Tour de France, tennis, athletics, snooker and superbikes.

They do but only Eurosport 1&2 like Sky, not all the on demand channels and ad free.

Thanks, i'll have to have a look and see if I can get any of it.

I remember back when all satellite TV apart from films was free watching skiing on Eurosport.
There was another sport channel too, Screensport I believe it was called.

It was Screensport. I used to watch CART on it.

It maybe part of the Discovery brand but I'm glad I took my pass out before they took over, at least they are still honouring the Eurosport agreement of an annual pas for £39.99.

That was a rather spectacular bridge in yesterdays stage, crosswinds made it a bit more interesting.

Certainly one spectacular bridge and completely closed for the tour. Very tempted by Discovery/GCN as it covers our main sports which we currently wach via Eurosport. The adverts don't worry me as we're usually watching recordings as days are too busy for TV.

Good win by van Aert todayin Yellow, rode away with it on his own
Felt sorry for the rider in the bunch sprint who thought he had won it.

I thought it strange that he had a skin suit on today. I dunno if that is something that riders are starting to do outside of TT stages.

It is strange, anything I suppose to gain that split second advantage.

Todays stage has a good few sections of cobbles, should be interesting and looking forward to it.
Glad its dry, some nasty accidents last time, nobody wants to see that or maybe some do?

By coincidence they played some old clips on the ITV4 coverage yesterday. It was sad to hear Paul Sherwen’s voice.

I went over to watch the TdF in 1981 and we saw Paul Sherwen at the end of the Roubaix stage, along with other blasts from the past, such as Sean Kelly, Graham Jones and Bernard Hinault..

random stage with the cobbles not very pretty
lets just get on to the hills !

FRIDAY !!!!

Well that was a surprise, I wasn't expecting a GC battle today not with what's coming tomorrow.

pog reminds me of armstrong at his peak , seeks out every opprtunity

Can one of the cycling guru's answer me a question please.
Most ( all?) of the bikes are now using disc brakes and the QR skewers ( if that's the correct word ) for releasing the wheels seem to have disappeared , so how do the mechanics change the wheels when the riders get a puncture

Probably just do a bike change.

they use a kind of impact bolt gun i think

mostly its just a "drill-driver" with the appropriate sized allen key in to release the thru-axle spindle.

It still takes time though, so for the "main riders" in the GC / other key riders, there'll be maybe 4 fully built and configured bikes on the outside of the roof rack, do a bike change, then as soon as riders away, change the wheel on the other bike for a spare wheel and re-hang ready for the next puncture.

I feel for the Shimano neutral service blokes though - so many different (non)standards compared to rim-brake era of 100mm front/130mm (or 126mm for the oldies like me who remember racing before the mid-80's and 7 speed coming in) rear and 5mm QR skewers

Thanks for the reply that makes it a lot clearer and answers my question

Thursday looks Fun !

bye-bye half the remaining sprinters that day - climb the Galibier straight out of the starting gate - 22km of pretty serious gradient from the sprint point to the Galibier could see the sprinters 20minutes down on any attacking climbers before the first downhill...

the tour is not about the sprinters they have had quite a few much easier stages up till now than they ordinarily they would have.
time for the GC fun and the pain

Exactly, not at all realistic for everday riding. I never had a problem with traditional brakes.

not true they are actually better as no springs or moving parts its just an expensive threaded bolt.
from a normal road user point of view its just an allen key to remove and refit the wheel.
they also give the correct tightness every time as the little drill drivers the pros use are set to a specific torque setting

it makes for a better aero solution as well

Yes, I can just see me having a support vehicle when I go out training for a couple of hours.

behave thats just so they can do them up in 2.456 of a second on a tour stage with the gun
reading the blurb its just an allen key with a decent tightness

no diferent to having to carry a 15mm spanner to remove wheels before quick release was introduced. Many riders have an allan key taped to the underneath of the saddle to help with neutral service, its just quicker full stop to swap bikes with a team mate or from the team car than it is to remove a wheel and put a new one in. Once you use disc brakes you will never want to be a rim brake bike ever again. Discs have much more modulation than rim brakes giving far more controll to braking especially quickly from speed
