Have been many times but not to anything racing on the Bugatti circuit, I would imagine your lens would be fine as there are raised banks to shoot from, I've only seen these from parking for the car 24hr race on the Bugatti circuit itself.

I've not been to the bikes at Le Mans, but for the 24 hrs, I found that there were some places where 200/250mm on a crop was fine, but others where it was inadequate. I'm taking a 150-500 on my 7D this year...

As for settings, DON'T assume that 1)VR/OS (if you use it) is switched on, 2)is set to Normal not Active, 3)AF is set to AF-C, 4)the settings you use on one day will magically have reset themselves to the correct ones the next, especially if you don't look at the first day's results before heading out the next...

If possible, decide on panning shutter speeds etc. during practice or qualifying. Speeds will be broadly similar to race speeds so you can get a good idea as to how much wheel/background blur you'll get at assorted speeds. Chances are that once the race is under way, you'll be busy shooting rather than reviewing and changing settings. Don't forget to use your Mk1 eyeballs and bone encased memory as well as your camera.

As for locations round the track, have a look at Google Earth and see what's been shot from assorted spots round the circuit. With a bit of luck, some people will have made sure that they've dropped their pins accurately rather than just plonking them somewhere near the spot.

Enjoy the trip and race!

Been to the 24 hrs.

For bikes however, my guess would be the last sequence of tight right handlers before the start/ finish. They tend to cut the corner with spectacular results.

The first chicane after the start is good if your lens has enough reach. This is good at the start of the race.

Coming over the top (underneath the Dunlop Bridge) is quite an iconic Le Mans shot as they ride down and bear right in Chapelle?

Enjoy it and fingers crossed for Rossi.

I have been to Le Mans a couple of times (not recently) and I would not be trying to photograph the cars on track like you would in the UK, lots of fences with limited views, I'd concentrate on the race goers, the atmosphere, the fair ground rides etc.

Le Mans is a fabulous place to go, I love photographing anything with an engine going fast but at Le Mans I think I would be mostly looking elsewhere for subjects.

I'm sure you'll have a great time either way, just pray for good weather.

David
