I have an image 1 want to select a window from and then overlay onto another identical one where the window is overexposed.

So I think layer mask. BUT when I create a layer mask and brush it out it appears "white" and not cross-hatched.

What am I doing wrong please???????

:bang:

Just carried out a "reset" on my PS CS5 preferences file - now OK!

or you could press alt + mask and it will be black. (on a PC)

My first thought is your painting on the actual layer not the mask, click on the mask itself before painting.
Can you post a screen grab of your layers palette?

As far as I could see I was doing it right - painting black on the mask but it didn't make the parts of the image "disappear" (cross hatch) just turned white in the brushed area - but doing a "reset" cured it - so I must have set something inadvertantly - works OK now doing just the same as I was doing before.
