Anyone used these for a slightly enhanced butterfly light style setup? I like the idea of being able to bring fill to the chin as well as back onto the side of the face. My concern though is catchlights....

Mr Edwards, if you are reading this......Your country needs YOU!...well erm, I do :D

Gary.

I didn't get double catchlights using a reflector, only when using two flashes in butterfly configuration.... I don't suppose it's impossible to get them though... why does it have to be a triflector, wouldn't any reflector serve that purpose?

I can't find many examples, but it looks like from the possible layout that the reflection can be angled around the shape of the face...centre under the chin, the two sides angled towards the cheeks...

Borrow mine if you like mate, just happen to have one that I bought from a certain Mr Flashman that I see he has replaced! lol

Ah, right, know what you mean now.... I was getting triflector mixed up with something else... even if there were double catchlights, would it be such a problem?

I think FOUR catchlights....one from key, three from the triflector. I don't mind multiple catch, just want to see this in action first....

ALI - TA :) But no! I am no good at looking after peoples stuff :D

Gary, couldn't you just have a studio head or even a speedlite on a very low power setting just to give a small fill to under the chin?

Currently sitting in my loftspace doing nothing so it's not a problem, honestly. I know you well enough by now! lol

Currently doing just that. It's a faff though, more cables and settings to have to worry about...

I'll buy one and sell it if it stinks. Seriously thanks for the offer, but I WILL loose it :D

Wow - not sure what I make of that tbh....my key light is the Octobox 150, I'm not sure how it would behave with the TF....

My existing catchlights (more or less):

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU MOANING ABOUT!!!! I swear you find problems that dont exist

But anyway, how about using a speedlite then? No wires, no cables, only a speedlite (even just placed on the floor pointing up?

OK, that example is bad because the space I was using wasn't causing me some shadow's I am currently getting, and also because she really is square on......I want slightly more creative control, and an ability to turn the head without having mega shade down the side.... :)

Gary, that is truly stunning, really beautifully lit. Is there something in this example you're unhappy with? The only suggestion I could make would be to use a rectangular softbox in place of the octabox to produce rectangular catchlights, more like from a window.

Bad example :D

I will try and find another....

Indeed, I'm not a fan of rectangular catchlights personally. LOVE your octabox catchlights.

I know what you mean though without having to find an example, but speedlite on the floor might be a best solution but again it's more costs involved :P

I have 4 speedlights...2 SB 900's, an SB 600 and some daft one which I don't know how to use. I hate batteries! :)

Have a quick google about SLA batteries :)
Happily get you around 1,000 flashes per charge I use a 6V 4.5mah SLA Battery on all three of my speedlites.

If you want some more detailed set-up details just give me a PM :)

If the tri-flector is doing its job - ie punching sufficient light back for it to make a real difference - then you are going to get those weird highlights.

I love the light, but hate the catchlights in the eyes. Looks spooky to me. PP them out is the only way I think, but that's far from easy as you've basically got to reconstruct the eye.

I've seen a big white one piece curved reflector used. The lighting effect isn't so strong but the reflection is much less visible because it's not three distinct bright spots but one less bright curve that blends into the shape of the eye better.

Ive used it and its very good. Just a tip for you , dont buy the lastolite mk2 version , go to the flash centre website and buy it there (its the mk1 version and sooo much better)

Matt

I've used one of these (the Mk1 version - no idea what the differences are though), no catchlight problems at all to speak of.

I wasn't entirely sold on it, but perhaps I just didn't get chance to use it enough to really get to grips with it.

Heh! I hardly used it at the time. Recently I saw some images taken with one (can't remember where) and thought 'Why the heck did I sell that Triflector?'... So got another! Using it a lot at the moment... will prolly get bored with it again soon though lol!

It's what lofts were made for Keith :) mine is currently residing up there but I know that when I want it I can go grab it. So it is not going anywhere and neither is my highlight which has not had an airing for ages!
