Been thinking of getting one of these.
Anyone had any bad experiences with them or is it all good.

Cheers

Depends how you intend on lighting it. All good my side and once you get use to putting it away its a good all around background, apart from the price.

I've been seriously considering getting a Hilite for when I go to people's houses to take pictures. With the lighting kit you have posted I think you are going to struggle to light the background on its own, let alone the subject. Most people suggest two lights for the Hilite, two on subject and (if you can) some light on the train too.

I didnt think those would be any good so just looking for some input from the guys on here.

I was thinking of lighting both ends but need some advice on what type of lighting is best to use.

I have these http://www.amazon.co.uk/PhotoSEL-LS...ghting-Softboxes/dp/B002I3VCGS/ref=pd_ys_iyr2 which might not be the right tools for the job.

Those wouldn't be any good, as they are continuous lights, and could potentially overheat inside the Hi-lite, and burn the Hi-lite, you need something like a Lencarta smartflash 200 (or equivalent) one in each side of the Hi-lite, then a main light for your subject, 3 lights are ok, but if you can stretch to 4, you have more options, Hi-lites are good, particularly for small spaces, but you are limited, in what you can do with them.

What would be the best option for the 3rd light if I'm using 2 x 200's?

Well you could use another smartflash 200, lencarta also do the Elite pro 300, i normally have 2x200 in the Hi-lite, and i use an Elite pro 300 for my main light, and another 200 for fill, but a lot of the time i only use the one Elite pro 300, with a large Octabox attached, i think Lencarta do a smartflash 200 kit which consists of 3x200 smartflash's some softboxes, stands, triggers etc, but i think Lencarta also can make a kit up for you to your spec, speak to Garry Edwards on here, he represents Lencarta, who also advertise here :)

Loads of threads on here aboutthe HiLite. I'll grab some links :)

Jim, not at all. Read the thread posted and the samples on there. 8'x7' train lit with one light.

I understand you "can" but it is impossible to light with one flash and get an even exposure. If you blast with light you will be sending too much light out of the hilite back towards your subject (I own the 6x7 and use an 8x7 also)

Jim, if you're looking to sell any of your gear let me know :) I'm only in Bellshill.

For the smart flash 200's, can these be triggered by RF 602's?

And for everyone else reading this post, if you have any of the above gear for sale, let me know.

:)

Cheers for all the input guys.

One light in a 8'x7' Hi-lite. Looks pretty evenly lit to me. And if I had had the correct modifier with me then there would not be a slight hot area to the left of the face. The even light has quite a bit to do with how you light it from the front. This is as shot with no post processing at all. Also If you are using the 2 stop over recommendation then you will get precisely the effect you are saying. From memory I think this is only 0.5 of a stop over.

Yip but that is a pretty small section of the 8x7 in the background. I would guess the subject is a distance away too so less likely to get any wrap. Try that in your standard living room space and it won't be the same.

Is the flash located in the centre of the hilight? Doesn't look side lit like most people do?

We've got the 7ft version and once you get past the hilarity of putting it up and taking it down in a confined space it's quite good.

We always light it with 2 lights as we noticed a great deal of fall off at the edges which needed to be brushed out in post later.

Do you mean the 8ft version?

I have a 6'x7' and it's very easy to put up take down. The 8x7 is the same except because it's bigger, it's a tighter fit in a living room!

Jim

It was lit from the left hand side. Even light top all around the subject, who was standing almost against the hi-lite.

From the same workshop showing the entire 8'x7' hi-lite width

What strobe and modifier were you using? The physics of light say it can't be even?!

This was with a Gemini 500 with reflector from the left firing into the hi-lite. the guys on the image are mostly people from this forum and will vouch that this is unedited.

I remember the thread and saw the images. It's no problem getting the background white but controlling the spill is the main issue

Hopefully this will help as well http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=322681 - I have tried a number of ways to light the HiLite and he most even results come from a light at either side in my opinion.

As has been said spill is the issue when you have a single client in front of the large version and you do not want to be fighting the large version inside a clients home.

As one of the dudes in he images and seeing how evenly Paul lit it with one lamp, I also have only used one light. Sure it may be easier with two but definitely can be done with one.

I don't over light. Found that out very quickly lol.

But find even on the 6x7 if I'm at f8 main and f10 in the centre of the highlight the lit edge is much brighter than the far end.

Yes back and diagonal towards the opposite corner but just short

I also have a reflector dish on the light-shirts. Tried small and large
