Having seen DiddyDave using his flash bracket, I bought one and I have to say I'm pleased with the results. I used it on a grey overcast day just to get some nice catchlights in peoples eyes and also to underexpose and draw attention away from busy backgrounds. Dead chuffed with the results!

However, today was my first day using it in anger on a paid job. And in getting my rig set-up, I damaged it sliding the camera plate onto the bracket. The piece of the bracket you slide the camera plate onto - the part that flips horizontal and vertical - has two prongs on the end of it.

You can see them on the left-hand side of the image upon the above linked page.

Anyway, it appears it's really easy to bend the two prongs. I had to forget mine for today's gig and I've subsequently fixed it with the aid of a hammer and a file.

In fact, it works now much better than it ever did ... It was always a real b!tch getting the camera plate to slide onto the bracket - now it's much easier.

The other main drawback is having the camera the wrong way up for portaits. In portrait mode, it works much better having the camera gripped and slid onto the bracket the wrong way around. However, in portrait mode my fingers are then not long enough to reach the shutter button. I'm tempted to try a wired remote release, but that might just be too much wiring to cope with when flipping from vertical to horizontal, the flash TTL cord is enough.

I'm sold on flash brackets ... what alternatives are there?

Have a look at the Demb flash bracket. It's about the same price and takes about a week from the USA.
