I've just loaded a film into my seemingly in normal working order Canonet QL19 but instead of no sound at all as it winds on there's a fairly horrid dragging/clicking sound. It doesn't sound like it's tearing but it was loaded as per usual and there's not been a problem before.

Anybody any suggestions as to what it might be / how easy it is to correct / who might be able to look at it?

Many thanks!

Nothing like this has happened to me; so I am just guessing here.

If I were you, I would open the back up and then try to wind, to see if the film has been loaded OK. If it is, I would rewind the film out ( with the leader out, so that it can be loaded again) , take out the film and try a dry run to see if there is a problem. If there is a problem, then it needs a clean in the least. POssibly not wirthwhile for a Canonet. If not, I'll load the film again to see if there is still a problem.

My guess will be it is happening due to a film loading problem.

Please let us know how it goes.

Sorted!

Thanks for your advice. I lost the film that was in but after experimenting it seemed to be needing a firmer hand than previously when loading and the next film has just gone in with no problem.

Was the film just a bit tight in the cannister maybe?

The QL in the name was Canon's Quick Load system developed to aid fast loading of 35mm film

I suspect that opening of the film cannister is a little tight and what you are hearing is the srockests which guide the film ripping them

I suggest the following things

1, gently turn the rewind knob on the top of the camera clockwise until you feel tension (that will be the film tightening )

2, Try to wind on , you should now notice the rewind knob turning anti clockwise.

If you still hear the grinding noise , and the knob does not turn then bite the bullet and open the back of the camera , look for damage on the film sprockets on the film, using a pair of scissors cut away the damaged film

Get any damaged film out of the wind on mecanism, then cut a new leader tab in to the film and try again

The QL system was brilliant when it worked however hnacered may a film up when it did not.

I'll keep this for reference!

The issue seems to have been how the film was sitting on the sprockets when the gate closed. Hopefully sorted now.
