Hi there,
I have been asked to do product shots for a rug company, they would like me to take the products shots with the rugs lying flat on the floor.
Does anyone know how to set up the camera so that I/camera can be above the products and take the pictures looking down on them?
I have tried it previously on a step ladder but had a lot of perspective correction to do in CS3.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Justin

No easy way.
I've seen it done on a made-up bit of flooring, lifted at one end to 45 degrees or so, still need a stepladder but perspective isn't a problem....nor lighting.

Using a 'tilted floor' is the starting point. The lowest part of the rug should be around 3' (not floor level) to allow lighting to be placed where needed.

Usually, an overhead gantry is built to get the camera directly above. If shooting digitally the camera can be controlled from the laptop apart from the focus, which won't change between shots. A small mirror temporarily placed in the centre of the rug ensures that the camera and rug are square to each other..

That's a starting point. A more professional approach is to use a monorail camera to ensure that perspective is spot on, easier than getting the camera and rug at precisely the same angle.

Hi there,
Thanks for replying. I should have worded it better, it is travel rugs/throws not the carpet type, sorry for any confusion caused!
They are 3-4meters in length by 2meters.
The reason it is more difficult is that when you put them on a slope or put them upright they sag in the middle, they would need to be laid flat.
Is there such a thing as a boom type idea for a Camera?

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks again

Justin.

How close are you cropping to the rug? Why not hang the rug on a wall?

Yes, you build a gantry as I suggested.
