Large print

I have been asked to supply a print of an image I have taken on my 5dc in as large a print scale as possible. It will be displayed in a garage so viewing distance will be quite close.

Largest print I can find is 2.5m by 1.2 m.

I'll get more details on the image when I'm on my laptop.

Any advice on what route to take? Or what scale? Canvas/print/acrylic? He already has a couple of A0 prints on his wall. But is keen to go big scale.

Viewing distance will be "quite close"? It would help if you could elaborate because that's going to be critical.

Your maximum image resolution is 4368 x 2912 pixels. If you print to 1.8m x 1.2m, then the print resolution will be 61 PPI.

61 PPI isn't a lot. But it's not that bad. The oft-quoted figure of 300 PPI is the resolution of the average human eye at a viewing distance of about a foot. At 5 feet it's 1/5th of this which is 60 PPI.

So if you upside your image carefully, it could look quite decent when viewed from a distance of about 5 feet. But it won't be so good from closer up.

It'll be in a garage so viewing distance may be 5ft or closer depending on where he placed it. I think the larger print may be a step too far from what you say. Possibly a longest edge of 1.2m? How large can I go keeping as close to 300ppi?

4368 x 2912 pixels at 300 ppi = 14½" x 9½". Not very large at all.

But you only need 300 ppi if you're looking at it from a range of about 1 foot.
Range 2 feet => need 150 ppi => 29" x 19" (quite large)
Range 3 feet => need 100 ppi => 44" x 29" (really quite large)
And so on.
