So I had a commission to take a big group picture, and thought hmm my biggest modifier is a 43" umbrella, could use a bigger one- so in a panic I ordered a 3mx3m diffusion cloth, and when it arrived I was a little disappointed that i'd just spend £50 on 3m of fabric. I didnt even use it in the end, so 't it's probably going back to amazon and now i'm either looking for something much cheaper, or something much better.

3m was way too big to handle, so more like 1.5x1.5 would be better.

I was thinking of just getting 1.5x1.5m of fabric cut from a roll, but what kind of fabric- I will only be using it with speedlites so no heat resistance needed, just good diffusion capability with little light loss, and if it could be easily cleaned that would be ace

I was thinking of building a PVC frame to hold the sheet, or clip it between super clamps on light stands. I'm all for DIY- i'm young and have a tight budget, but I am also a professional so my gear needs to look professional, and withstand abuse, I saw these 2 products

and wondered if anyone had experience with them, and whether they were worth the money or if I should just buy some thick fabric, and build a PVC frame- would be easier to use as they break down pretty easily and spring together easily, but it's hard to really know something without touching it or using it- suppose I could order both, and see what I think and send the one i don't want back (so glad I bought amazon prime)

You could make a frame and use the diffusion materials designed for the job,
Ripstop nylon, which is used to make softbox diffusion panels, would be fine too, and a bit tougher.
If you're only using it with speedlights you may struggle with having inadequate power

Shower curtains work quote well, the white opaque cloth ones I have cut them to size for home made soft boxes, of pegged/clipped a circle on the front of an umbrella :)
Shower curtains work extremely well, as long as they are plain and are a true, neutral white.

thanks Garry, I found a really great link to a DIY frame, it even folds down in the same way as the full priced product- only difference really is that the full price product has a carry bag (actually quite handy), and is a reflector as well as a diffuser.

Will look into the white ripstop nylon, looks like it will do the job. I'll double up on speedlites, and i'm usually shooting quite large f stops anyway
