Having bought a D3 and hung onto the D300 with grip, I'm now struggling to carry my kit.

I shoot motor sport so aside from the two bodies, I usually carry a 300mm f4, an 80-200 f2.8, the hefty 28-70 f2.8 and at least one of my smaller primes.

Most ads for show bags a host of small primes and a single body but not too many show two longer primes and two bulky bodies.

Can anyone recommend a suitable bag. The Kata stuff looks nice but if I'd realised the problems the D3 was going to cause in terms of bag space, I'd have spent time at Focus trying everything out to see what suits.

I have a Lowepro photo trekker awII that holds an awful lot of kit in it I have the following.

d200 gripped with sigma 24-70 2.8
d300 gripped with sigma 70-200 2.8
sigma 10-20
nikon 50mm 1.4
Zeiss 50mm plannar 1.4
Nikon 105vr
set extension tubes
sigma 1.4tc
sb800
sb900
battery chargers
lee filter folder, filters
other filters
ttl flash lead
2x qr manfrotto plates
and other odds and sods.

Is a great backpack which even with this kit in I can go for a 3-4 walk in the forest and not feel bad at the end of it.

Have you looked at the ThinkTank Retrospective's?

I don't think this would the thing for me as I think I'm right in saying that the Retrospective range are all shoulder bags. I hike miles at rally events and hill climbs so a rucksack bag would be more the style I'd be looking at.

I've recently purchased a Tamrax Expedition 8x. Takes a 40d with 300 f2.8 attached plenty of room still down the middle of the bag.

Went out with it last weekend for the first time so added a 55-250 plus 400 f56, pair of bins, 2 converters and a few other nick naks and didn't have any problem at all with back ache or the weight of the back pack the whole day.

I was in a simalar situation to you and have a simalar amount of gear, so for Christmas one of the things I treated myself to was a
Lowepro Pro Runner 450AW Backpack. I can't fault it so far, holds all the gear listed in my profile with room to spare including tripod & monopod, quality seems very good too... I paid £65...chuffed:)

I used a National geographic large backpack for motorsport.
It carried;
Gripped 20d, (replaced by 1dIII)
5d,
300 f2.8
70-200 f2.8
24-105 f4
20-40 f2.8
100 f2.8 macro
Flash.
And all my cards, batteries, + chargers, filters. A bottle or two of water. A laptop and power brick. And monopod attached to the side.
Its a huge bag, with some weight to it, but spreads the load very well on your back.

I got mine from Canada, even with shipping and tax it was about half the cost in this country.

Have a look at the FStop Satori, their bags are all designed to make carrying a lot of gear comfortable, they are decent rucksacks with camera padding, rather than camera bags with shoulder straps.

I've been using ThinkTank for years with 2x pro bodies and big primes (e.g. 500/4 and 400/4).

I used an Airport Acceleration for big trips (with 1DIV, 7D, 1.4x, 70-200/4, 400/4 and 500/4 -it can't quite fit the 70-200/2.8) and the StreetWalker Harddrive if I am travelling lighter (1DIV, 7D, 70-200/2.8, 17-55, flash, 1.4x, extension tubes and 400/4 or 500/4 - oh, and a laptop)

Look at Dakine Sequence/Mission and F-Stop Tilopia

I don't think the Dakine sequence will hold all of the gear in the OP's list, it will take one body and long lens, another body and some smaller lenses but I don't think there would be room for a second long lens. They also don't carry too well.
