I'm considering purchasing a laptop which will no doubt be used for some image editing. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. Screen quality is probably the most important factor for me. I'm looking at either a Dell or a Toshiba with a 17" display at the moment. Both models have 2Gig of RAM, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

I have heard that colour calibration tools can have problems with LCD displays. Is this true?

Thanks, Rich.

Most laptops nowadays come with a big hard drive and a arm full of RAM. I looked at a Toshiba today 120Gb hard Drive, 2Gb RAM, Multilayer DVD , Wide Screen, Coffee maker ( No just kidding) and all for £499. Great spec. My Compac that's 18 months old wasn't half that spec at the same price.

You've got plenty of hard drive space for storage. Ram that would be OK for Photoshop.
So all in all a good machine.

Good colour calibration tools such as the Huey Pro and similar shouldn't have problems with LCD screens as they are now designed to work with them.

I asked the very same question on another forum recently and from their advice ended up with a Dell Vostro 1700 - 2Gb RAM, 2GHz dual core processor, 256Mb nVidia dedicated graphics, 17" Truelife display (1920x1200).

Most people were of the opinion that whilst not absolutely necessary for 2D applications the graphics card would help performance. The Truelife display has had bad reviews for being too reflective and whilst this is true and it is much more than a matte screen it has not caused me any problems.

It flies through CS2 and the display has lovely colours and crispness. Haven't tried calibrating the screen but I can't see any appreciable differences when I look at processed images on my calibrated desktop CRT.

FWIW bought mine on fleabay from this seller. Nice Guy and had it delivered by UPS 2 days after the auction.
