Can anyone help with a quick fix/problem diagnosis. Im running a laptop with XP. When I switch it on it goes through the usual start up routine. When I get to the XP loading screen it then jumps to a screen apologising for the problem and gives me options to start in safe mode, safe mode + network, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start normally. Regardless of which option I choose the laptop reboots, shows the XP screen again, then a very short glimpse of a blue problem screen and then back to the "we apologise...." screen. Basically Im stuck in a loop.

This has just started - could it be a virus? Is it fixable ?

Any advise, as ever, will be greatly appreciated

If it wont boot into Windows, I would try inserting the Windows XP setup disk and going through the recovery process

Thanks laurie for the advice. Chucked the disk in and the repair console sorted it at the 3rd attempt but I think I have a HDD problem as a couple of problems were identified. At least its back up. Running scanners to check for viruses etc.

Thanks again !!

Yep - ran chkdsk and it repoted that i had at least one HDD fault but didnt say what !! Thanks for the tip on the windows update !!

Are there any free HDD checking progs out there that could help/fix any faults?

Glad you got it sorted!

The best programs are ones from the hard drive manufacturers themselvers....check the make of your drive (western digital, seagate etc etc) and there should be a hard drive checker on the companies website. They usually repair bad sectors etc
