Hi Guys,

I bought my son a gaming laptop at Christmas and he's barely used it. The problem I've noticed though is that on the handful of occasions it's been switched on the battery is completely dead. I've run the diagnostic tools and it says the battery has passed. I've been on to HP support via WhatsApp for over two hours and I'm getting nowhere. They keep saying run the battery diagnostic and then it passes.

Any ideas as to what could be draining this battery? The laptop works perfectly when plugged in but if i turn it off tonight it will be dead by tomorrow.

It's being shut down via the windows menu so shouldn't be that.

Thanks.

Does the battery show as 100% when plugged in and charged for several hours? What happens if you fully charge the battery, then shut the laptop down, unplug the charger & restart?

I can't see anything specific on the net, but it seems most likely that either the battery or the charging circuitry is faulty.

You can check if there is something wrong with the battery itself, or if the laptop is draining it even when switched off, by charging the battery before removing it overnight and then plugging it back in again in the morning. If the battery is dead in the morning then it is a battery fault (or fault with the charger) but if it is still charged up then there is something going on inside the laptop itself.

The battery in my wife's HP laptop didn't last very long simply because she insisted on having the device plugged into the mains all the time. I told her it would kill the battery and it did in under a year. At that time I had an identical laptop (we bought them both together) and the battery in that lasted about 3 years, but I always used the device on battery power and only plugged in the charger when it was needed.

Hope this helps (y)

He's shut it down via the windows task bar then closed the lid and placed it in the bag. If you charge it it states it's at 100% then when it's taken out the bag and switched on it's dead. When you connect it to the mains then you can start it again.

HP's tech help is so bad that after around two hours of them telling me something then not replying for 20 minutes or more i had sent them an update at 17.11 and they replied at 20.03. Unbelievable service.

Like others have said, that's most likely a faulty battery. Where did you buy it from?

Return it and insist on a replacement. With IT support like this, only a sternly worded complaint will work. They'll try to fob you off for as long as you'll let them. Most people give up eventually.

My HP laptop battery went dead , it wouldn't recharge at all but i resurrected it nothing to do with software just pure electronics, and now it charges to 100% , Might not be the same problem though. Amazing what you can learn from you tube laptop repairs. Can you measure the voltage of the battery with a multi meter ?.

i have an HP laptop cost me about £450 about 4 years ago and its been fine but just recently it gets to about 30% battery and just goes off , when i connect to PSU and boot it back up it displays a BIOS warning basically saying the battery has sh!t itself and needs replacing. however its been used every one of those days and been in and out of so many rucksacks and work bags i will just buy a new one and swap it out.

Have you replaced the internal button battery to the lap top ?.
Too much chucking stuff away these days to get you to buy brand new just to keep up with the pack, when probably a simple fix can get it going again with some extra electronics knowledge .
