Hi, looking at getting a new laptop and trying to keep out of the apple thing because I'm not mega rich, just wondering if anybody has any opinions on a laptop that will cope with reasonably large raw files and stacking photos occasionally with out taking so long that I'm inclined to start reading a book.
Appreciation in advance as I'm very lax at replying.

To be honest with a grand available you shouldn't have any difficulty in finding a laptop for photo work.

Just look for i5 or i7 with as much RAM as possible with a SSD and (maybe) and second hdd.

Thanks greenninja, I'm a little confused after looking at amounts of ram vs smaller ram and a grafix card, the ones iv looked at are 512 ssd drives so I'm assuming I can use external hard drives for bulk storage?, does screen size really matter? Or screen quality?

Size no as you can add an external monitor and use it like a desktop.

Quality yes as if used without an external monitor you want it looking as good as possible for photo work.

I'd go for RAM every time over a GFX card.

Thank you, food for thought, next barrage, is 8 gig enough or 16 as a minimum

I'd certainly go for 16gb of RAM if I were you. It's probably not too much more on a non Apple laptop.

Does anybody have any experience with the HP ENVY line of laptops?

Lots of possibilities around the grand mark. At that price I'd be looking for a 9th/10th gen i5 or i7 processor, 16GB RAM (don't need more for photos) 512GB NVMe storage, FHD or possibly QHD IPS screen.

These are REALLY good, but a bit over budget: https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dell-xps-15-inch-laptop-3352858

I'd also have a wander through the Dell outlet and look at refurbs/scratch'n'dent stock for a good deal.

I wouldn't get hung up on intel processors, the ryzens are a match for them and you get more bank for your buck with them. You should get a decent laptop for around 700 quid

I have one of these, superb kit for the money, I opted for 16GB RAM these are blisteringly fast at doing anything, only a year old and now discontinued so some real new bargains to be had.

edit: I have just done a search and you will be lucky to find the i7 version, plenty of new i5 available, but I have no idea if they are as good as my i7 but at around £700 for the i5 they are a steal.
