80 odd quid for iCAP (edit: 85e = about 60 quid)
http://www.e.icap-shop.com/icap-pro-cover/icap-mid-pro.html

I ahve the seaport laptoop case that opens up a cover.. but if chance of rain then i take a rucksack with wet gear in.. pants and extra rain coat plus crries laptop... cant be taking big laptop case as well.. look like i am off on holiday or summat.. so a fold up cover that can go in rucksack is the answer and its a 15" laptop

which if the above two or any alternatives.. especialy cheaper?

asked elsewhere as well.. icap max size ordered.. 70 odd quid delivered from above source..

Think you made the right choice.

I have the iCap and it is a more robust and confidence inspiring solution than the Think Tank.

Why not compushade £20 0r one of the £9.99 fold up ones. They look easier to use?

Will be interested to hear you thoughts when it arrives, especially

- pack down size
- bulk when operating (i.e. could you use it in a packed pit with 6 other photographers and not get in their way(
- confidence using in rain (especially anything more than light drizzle)

regards,

Nigel

For me - just the simple GriffGear shade is good - with bit of DIY rainproofing for those wet outdoor jobs.
Doesn't take much space - and keeps things dry in even a proper storm.
But as said, bit of DIY to make it weather-proof... but much smaller than the options earlier in the thread and easy to use in small spaces (with photogs squeezed on benches)

Griffgear shade is what I use in sunny dry weather, or in the media room to reduce the glare of strip lighting / have some privacy from the guys working next to me. For rain through the iCap is great. Packs to about 6x6x1" and is only marginally bigger than the laptop it is protecting assuming you pick the correct size.

If you have space for a laptop either on the ground or resting on a bag/case/stool then you should have enough room for an iCap.

Clear blue sky and very bright sunshine today.. usually a struggle.. but not now.. worked perfect :)

Is the icap easy to pack away it seems to have bad reputation for folding up and packing away?

It is a bit like folding a reflector or lastolite backdrop. There is a technique to it, once you have that it is easy. The printed instructions are easy to follow.

That said I'm sure there are people who will never get it but that shouldn't be a reason..

The hands have been printed in the wrong place on mine so it threw me for a bit... Once you get over the fear of breaking soemhtign on the first day.. its not too bad to fold :)

How much protection do you think it will give against the rain? Looks like it will handle a light drizzle but nothing too heavy?

Any update please Kippax. Have you used it in the rain yet?

Thanks

David

Nope... not used it at every game .. but weather been fine so far anyways.. been at games every sat and midweeks.. no downpour of rain yet..

FWIW probably going to be selling mine in a week or so.

Stopped shooting football, and so as a fair weather tennis photographer, or out on a rib for sailing images I no longer have a need for it....

I'll get it listed and photographed for Classifieds next weekend.

Not sure if we are allowed to trade but if we are, might be interested

Thanks anyway. I just know that it will rain for my first match at KP stadium in a few weeks time. So I need the protection.

well it was raining for the first time tonight..at blackburn v derby.. not a pour down.. but deffo kept everyhting dry :)

Used the icap on Saturday at Football and it did the job of keeping the rain off the laptop extremely well. However, I have a suspicion that it had an adverse effect on the Wifi connection causing some problems with transmission of images. Made connection run very slowly. Everything speeded up when I went back indoors to press room. In the second half when the rain eased and I was back outside without the icap, speed improved compared to first half so I am deducing that it was the icap that caused the slowdown. Anyway at least the lap top stayed dry!

Interesting observation on the Wifi - I use a 4G dongle so sits inside the iCap and never noticed a difference

I use my phone.. whats the point of having a phone on the internet and a dongle? :)

Not sure if its my iPhone and Mac combination not working properly but I'm always having to reconnect after a period of inactivity. I find having the dongle attached much more reliable and for about £6 a month it's worth it for me. Having the phone and dongle on different networks also gives some extra resilience

Did think about using Personal Hotspot. Will try next time ... If it is raining!

works flawlessly for me guys.. got a motoroloG 4g and laptop connects no problem.. always a solid connection ..just leave phone in my pocket...

1 bill a month better than 2 as well :)

Well my icap lasted 5 years :)

Went wonky some time ago with one of the top wires bent too far... but then holes started appearing and finallly the wire frame is popping through the plastic

I think covid might be to blame for its demise..... normal pitchside your on grass or whatever..... now i cant go pitchside doing a lot of game son concrete so the bottom of the icap has suffered..

anyways.. 5 yrs with a LOT of use aint bad... but £89 paying out for a new one hurt ..

... but £89 paying out for a new one hurt ..
Looking on the positive side, Tony.....25 miles further east and you'd be a Yorkshireman.... then it would have hurt even more!

Having had saturdays match postponed (found out 10 miles away from doncaster :( ) and now tuesdays match accy v sunderland postponed at least I can use the new icap at the next match.... sat 2nd january thats if portsmouth players recover from there current virus P-P in time..

So my new Icap MAX PRO arrived today as the one I had for the last 5 yrs has seen better days.. Not helped by having to use on concrete lately not being allowed pitchside

First off yet again the hand/thumb markers for folding are in the wrong place (double checked with instructions and online video) this ones got silver sides and top as apposed to black.. its got gaps along the bottom sides for leads.. these can be velcro closed AND best of all its got a decent size pouch for the folded icap to fit into.. the old one was smaller/tight and had a foldover top... this is much better drop in zip up...

Not massive differences but enough
