Here's my plan:

Camping in the lake district - man and dog getting in touch with nature. Location: Wastwater and Lake Buttermere, take some great landscape pictures. blah blah

I'm 23 years old and have never been camping before. Pretty fit, but I just don't know the landscape of that area. I will be getting a train to Ravenglass, I just want to know (from anyone who's been there) is it possible to get from:

Ravenglass > Lake Wastwater > Lake Buttermere on foot

I'll have OS Explorer maps compass etc, but just need to know whether the terrain is walkable with heavy **** on my back?

im not a walker so dont know about distances etc.

could you not walk the coast up to st bees and get onto the well trodden coast2coast walk takes you across the bottom of buttermere IIRC and then back down to wastwater (or the other way round)

im sure thier must be footpaths on your route though, most of the lakes is well trodden and anyone thats reasonably fit should be ok.

infact looking at it if ou get off at ravenglass then 'laal' ratty will tkae you upto eskdale green with b****r all effort for a few quid! theres also a campsite by the looks of it just up from eskdale. you then need to go northish from there round the side of scarfell to get to wastwater

again i dont really walk (more a mountainbiker myself) so no idea on terrai

Awesome I will look into those routes. Thanks for the advice!

In about 3 weeks (i'm busy the next couple of weekends). Will keep an eye out for a period of good weather too. Are they cool with you camping where you want? Or is it only allowed in permitted sites?

im a bit unsure about that tbh, im sure the right to roam act explains it but i dont know for sure. im tempted to say no, but the lads at work seem to think its ok (lakes born n bread)

Sorry to be pedantic, but the locals will laugh in your face if you ever use the terms 'Lake Buttermere' and 'Lake Wast Water'. Wast Water is exactly what it says on the tin, a water, and Buttermere has 'mere' in it's name, meaning lake! The only 'lake' in Cumbria is Bassenthwaite Lake.:D

The 1st part of your journey seems to be fine, but you'll have a fairly decent hike from Wasdale to Buttermere. What's your timeframe??

i think only the 'friends of the lakes' red socks brigade will be the only people who actually care (they seem to have a negative opinion on everything even cyclists riding on a designated cycle path is out of order according to them!

Yeah I really love arrogant locals and will be sure to associate myself with them. Not being in this country too long I'm not really down with all the terms either, just getting my info from the web, and most of it declares Wast Water a lake. But thanks for the heads up.

I plan to do it all in 3-4 days

I can't walk a massive distance but I CAN tell you where to get really nice ice cream in Buttermere :woot:

If I'm free and the weather's nice, I could possibly meet you in Buttermere and show you round a bit?
Any other locals up for anything? Whitewash?

yeh depends when it is though, give me an excuse to get the camera out as it hardly gets used!

Sorry if I came across as arrogant, I was aiming for pedantic, honest!!! :D 3 days is plenty - I thought you were trying to do it in 1 day or summat.

In terms of camping, I've done so on the side of mountains/in the more remote areas, but if it looks like you're on any kind of farm land, the farmer might not take too kindly too it. I'd recommend Wasdale Head campsite if you plan to stay 'en piste' - nice site, and right next to the Wasdale Head Inn. You'd mebbe need to book in advance though.

If you do decide on Buttermere, head on to Loweswater too - it's by far and away my favourite lake. You could head over Great Gable, and drop into Seatoller and wander up the Borrowdale Valley - it does get wet over there though!! :)

Sounds good man, thanks for the advice. I have my OS maps so i will start planning a route

My plan is to be there over the weekend 11-12th july with some weekdays either side. If anyone wants the excuse of getting out and getting some shots, you're welcome to come along and show me some good views

i might do that.

its a nice walk up from seatoller (i think) up over the top to wadenlath and then onwards over wallacrag to keswick, although admittedly its a damnsight better going the other way on the mountainbike!
