Lake District - where to go?

Hi all,
We're heading up to the Lakes at Bank Holiday. Wondering what the "must-see" things are. We're only there for 3 days, so it will be a whistle-stop tour, but could do with some tips of where to head to (non-photography based mostly!!)

Lake Windermere, is a must, boat trips, plenty of good eateries, pubs etc...!
 
south lakes zoo near barrow

muncaster castle and bird of prey centre also ravenglass railway and rspb reserve that way

kendal is a nice village

windermere and the boat trip down to the wildlife place and steam railway, up the other end to the shops and nice chippy

there is so much you can do its imposible to mention everything. i like to go and just chill walk up coniston old man to the old mines and then realise there is steps up the other side doh
 
Striding Edge is an amazing walk. Its the sharp ridge that leads up to Helvellyn. Almost certainly the best mountain/hill type walk in the lakes. The old man of Coniston is also a good mountain walk.
Visit Ambleside and Windermere villages, both are stunningly beautiful places with wonderful buildings. If you go to Ambleside stop for some food at Zeffirelli's, a great resturant/cafe.

Enjoy it and have fun. The Lake district is a stunning place, best scenery in England imHo :)

On a Bank Holiday, are you mad? It'll be full of the blue rinse brigade and it'll be chocker. Head north towards Keswick & Derwent Water where it'll be much quieter but the scenery no less impressive. And the boat ride around Derwent is equally as nice as Windermere. Also, get across to Coniston for a visit. But stay away from Windermere, it'll be mad there!

That be one of our biggest lakeland towns :) and traffic is awful at the moment.

You can do the "lake" thing - as in Grasmere (don't forget the gingerbread) and Rydal. Then maybe over the top of Redbank to Elterwater and then into langdale MAP HERE

I prefer the northern Lakes - but then again i'm only 20 mins from them :), so Ullswater, Aira Force, over Kirkstone Pass then perhaps down into Ambleside (if your brave) back via thirlmere (the dead lake) for an ice cream and some red squirrels (not for eating) then to Castlerigg stone circle for the sunset.

A short drive away is the Yorkshire Dales, home to the Waterfall Walk which is absolutely stunning.
We went to Windermere on a bitterly cold day, and ended up sipping hot chocolate in the pub. However, in decent weather it's a beautiful place to see.

Just off the M6, pop in to the Longlands Hotel for dinner. The food is superb, portions are generous, and prices extremely reasonable.

We've made the area our annual "long weekend" getaway.
 
A second vote here for Helvelyn and Striding Edge. There is also an old slate mine on the way up and a beautiful little lake. Glendenning, at the bottom of the mountain, is pretty nice as well.

Personally I find the larger towns a bit too touristy :suspect:
 
Thanks for all the tips folks. There is a cracking Tapas bar in Bowness that i've been to before. I'll have a Google Maps for some of the places you mention :)

If you can find your way to Blea Tarn, Langdale way, its worth it. Its a small, quiet and beautiful place and just behind it there's a cracking stream with burbling falls and lovely scenery. There are a few shots in my gallery on here - they don't do it justice!

If mountains are your "thing" then you simply can't beat the scenery around Keswick - can't believe no-one has mentioned Buttermere / Crummock Water, most stunning place in the Lakes

Keswick area is the only place in the lakes i really know. Beautiful mountains.

in fact i have a really bad over exposed pano of Skiddaw from a fell just outside cockermouth - see if i can track it down...
 
Hi there.

Another vote here for Hellvellyn via Striding Edge - a great walk and stunning views.
Also, Patterdale offers great views over Ullswater if you were after any photos.
Grasmere is absolutely gorgeous and Scafell Pike is a good days walking!

This list could go on forever as the lake district has so many 'must sees'.

Here's another vote for Keswick and Derwent Water. :D
Ambleside and Ullswater are lovely too! To be fair, you can't really go far wrong most places you go in the Lakes.

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near Kendal. It's really not to my tastes as a place.
 
I was in Ambleside on Sunday buying walking gear for my holiday.

I can recommend the Apple Pie Cafe. Didn't have the pie but their chocolate covered flapjack is scrummy.

If you like trains there is the Ratty at Ravenglass. I also love Tarn Hows just outside Coniston. Its not too far to walk right round and is very pretty.
