l plates

Imagine an L shaped bracket with both the bottom edge and the side edge as a quick release plate, you can whip the camera off the tripod having been shooting in landscape (sideways) orientation, turn it 90 degrees and pop it back onto the tripod in portrait (upright) orientation. Other than the change of orientation you've not changed composition, whatever was central in your landscape shot is still central in your portrait shot.

I use mine mainly for landscapes, they're handy when working with scenes where accurate composition is important, where you're working with symmetry for example. If using a ball head normally if you want to go from landscape to portrait you have to angle the ball head right across to one side, hence recomposing the shot, hence you've now got to move your tripod legs to get back to your original position.

Take this shot for example,

I needed to be absolutely central between the walls, I tried a landscape shot but it didn't work as I wanted, flipped the camera into portrait and job done.

As someone on here said recently, there are those that don't understand the point of an L-bracket, and there are those that use them.

For anyone that does a lot of tripod shooting, they are amazingly liberating. One of the best things I did a few years ago was get an L-bracket (they're fit and forget) and swap everything to the Arca-Swiss quick-release system.

A little bit of a digression, but can anyone recommend an L bracket (Arca-Swiss compatible) for a Canon 50D? Price is a factor ;) I have a Red Snapper RSH-12 head.

Run a google search, brands as mentioned, plus Markins, SunWayFoto and some lesser known makes on ebay that look good quality for about £75.

Thank you all for your replies and apologies to the OP for hijacking the thread. Now to get my most important photographic accessory to hand - a bit of plastic about 8½ by 5½ cm :D
