Yes
I take landscapes and, strangely enough, I take many in portrait mode which is a pain when using a tripod i.e flipping from landscape to portrait. I've seen L brackets which would help but it seems that I need to change the head on my tripod and I'm confused by the price difference on the L bracket. I have a Manfrotto 055xprob. What head do I need to change to and what L bracket would you recommend, clearly keeping the price to a minimum?

What head do you currently use?

Manfrotto do One! It’s over £100 though! I do have one

Get an arca swiss adapter and remove the RC2 plate, replace with adapter - then get an L bracket, agree the sunwayfoto are good (I use one on my D810 - nicely made). I used a Hejnar Photo for the conversion, but they are fiercely expensive (very good though) @HoppyUK often quotes another brand iirc - he's tagged so may pop in.

For anyone using a tripod regularly and the camera in vertical orientation, and L-bracket will transform your working.

As Paul B says, you need an Arca-Swiss type L-bracket and an Arca-Swiss clamp on your tripod head in place of the Manfrotto one. You could do the whole thing for £30 if you know what your're doing and shop around for the right bits from China. Or you could pay a heck of a lot more...

Not much point in saying more without knowing exactly what you've got (head, camera/lenses, intended use, budget etc). I think there may also be remote-release cable issues with your Nikon D750. Quite a few people use this as an opportunity to upgrade to an Arca-Swiss type head ;)

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I have Manfrotto 498RC2 as the head. Not bothered about issues with remote release as, even though I have one, I use the 2 sec delay and mirror lock-up method. I like the £30 option

Then you need something like this link, that includes a little adapter so the new Arca-Swiss clamp bolts straight on*. This one also includes a top-panning clamp that's really useful for level panning panoramas. £30 is a good price for all that, but there are plenty of other (cheaper) options without the panning feature.

For the L-bracket, search Amazon/ebay. You can get universal ones for around a tenner and there's frankly nothing wrong with the quality, but they may or may not be a perfect fit and they're often two-pieces bolted together. That's fine in principle, but leaves a sharp right-angle that digs into the palm of your hand. A smooth and snug fitting L-bracket is important if you just want a permanent fit and forget.

*You need some basic DIY skills, and a bit of brute force, to get the Manfrotto clamp off ;)
