Are Kood filters any good? They seem to be very cheap but are they good value - do they worK?! The Kood 72mm UV / Haze Filter is about half the price of a similar Hoya filter, but is it of lesser quality?

not really
no
at doing what..?
yes

:lol:.............have a read ''here''....chapter4........lab test of UV filters

for your info.............there are 3 camps here - who will never agree

1...i ALWAYS use protection filters
2...ALL filters degrade the image...use a hood if protection of the front glass is the aim
3...i use a filter at beach sand/rallies/seaspray...otherwise a hood

bit tongue in cheek but really it's up to you

if you do decide on a protection filter - get the best you can afford
B+W UV Haze are very good, as are Hoya HD or Hoya Pro-1
or Marumi DHG if you are on a budget

i used a 72mm Marumi on my Sigma 17-70mm as the front glass is somewhat exposed

but, on my Nikon lenses I rely on the hood only

HTH....john

Thanks John - some interesting things to ponder here.

.
Hugh............you'll see on the Lenstip report that Hoya HMC UV did very well

i have Hoya HMC 1B filters on all 7 of my Canon FD lenses [that's a film camera BTW...]

the HMC multi-coated filters reflect a green image when held under a desk-lamp
if it's white - it's an uncoated filter = for the bin

I've recently done some test shots comparing these 52mm HMC 1B filters against Hoya Pro-1 UV and Pro-1 Protectors.

[will post asap]

I cannot see any image degradation [mind you I use glasses].. so if you prefer some protection but budget is a consideration....you could scan eBay for a Hoya HMC UV(0) or UV(c)...the UV(c) is a newer version and slimline

John, Thanks for the advice. I found the reviews and your suggestions very interesting and useful. I think I will take the Hoya option. Cheers, Hugh
