Hi all

I am using the Kodak Easyshare V610 and think its a fantastic camera during the day but am struggling to do much with it in low light. It works well in close-up situations using the flash but to capture anything with lights in the distance seems impossible. Depending on the mode I select it either does not really show the light or blurs terribly, even when keeping the camera particularly still. I am pretty new to photography and am only using some of the camera presets so maybe I am doing something wrong. The image appears OK on the screen before taking the image, I just dont know how to capture what I am seeing! Pls help!

thanks

This is a limitation of the small sensors used in point and shoot cameras. To take pictures in low light you will need to have the camera supported on a table or tripod or clamped to something with your hand. If anything in the frame is moving then it will still be blurred.

If you want to take handheld pictures in low light then you need a DSLR.

To take sharp shots in low light you need to keep the camera very still as Jamougha says and/or use a fast shutter speed. According to Kodak the V610 can be set to iso 400 on automatic or as high as 800 manually, setting a higher iso like 400 or 800 will allow you to use a faster shutter speed but the shot will almost certainly be grainy and noisy. Only by trying it will you know how well it works. I suggest have a good read of the instruction manual and have the camera in your hand while you do it, try out the things you're reading about at the same time so you can see how it works. In the end the camera just might not work well in low light, if that's the case you'll have to either change it or use it for what it is good at.

My experience of another Kodak model a few years ago was just the same. Great outdoors camera but indoors, forget it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try upping the ISO and give a tripod a go. Although it sounds like a lot of point and click camera have similar problems mine is definitely worse than all my friends cameras in these night conditions.
