I am in an interesting situation. Having sold my 350D and kit lens, I now have nothing less than 50mm. I also have quite a lot of money.

I have about £300 available to buy a new lens. My first choice was the tamron 17-50 2.8 - indeed I even bought one, and sent it back because it front focussed, and I am tempted to buy another.

However, I thought I'd ask your advice. The lens wouldn't be for anything specific - everything from landscapes to portraits, however it needs to be quite fast, and can't be too expensive.

The options available are the Sigma 18-50 2.8, the aforementioned tammy, the siggy 17-70 (is the extra 20mm worth the loss of 2.8?) and perhaps a sigma 24-70 or somesuch. However, that's probably not wide enough for a 1.6 crop 20D.

Don't suggest a £500 lens, or that I "Save up a little more" - I have a budget, and I'll only consider going about 15% over if the resultant is far better than the cheaper alternatives.

I am quite happy to buy from HK, America, Kerso etc - I'm scottish, and therefore by my nature cheap :p

Thanks in advance!

Leo

i had the sigma but didnt like it, im temped buy the tamron again very intrested buy that myself. I am tempted to buy a 17-40L from Kerson on ebay which comes out about 415 delivered but you can claim 70 cashback. Although it is f4, i have the feeling that it may do the trick for me as i have the 50mm 1.8 for the speed and a 100mm macro 2.8.

I will prob go for the Canon but its f4 is a bit detering....

I am thinking of getting the 24-70 f/2.8 myself. By all accounts is is a very good lens but you have struck the problem I am having, 24m just isn't really wide enough on a crop camera. The plus for the 24-70 over the 17-70 is that it is full frame and it has a lot better IQ partly due to that, and whats more you can get it for less than £200 from the bay.

I am interested to see what you get as I am looking for a lens to do a very similar job. :)

I think if I got a 24mm + lens, I'd have to get an UWA as well, simply because I can't stand having no wide angle. That would take me significantly over budget :(.

I'll probably go for the Tammy, although if I had my way I'd get an UWA (eg 10-22, 12-24 etc) and a 24-70 2.8 for the longish end...

Anyway, as I can't afford that, its the tammy.

yeah know what you mean dude about the wa lenses, im in the same predcament!

The 10-20 and 24-70, which I am thinking of getting to cover all my needs, look to be just over £400 together from digitalrev (as long as they are not taxed) so it's no hugely over budget. But it is still quite substantial, the bonus over the tammy is that you will get lenses that will cover the full range of what you want, not just one in the centre of that range. I suppose it depend on what lens you have over the 50mm mark.

can you get cashback from digitalrev?
