hi probably been asked before.Sister buying me umbrella and bracket for birthday.Seen a kit in Warehouse Express Wexbro mini umbrella kit.60 cm black/white/trans. + bracket + hotshoe. Will this be any good for portraits and general off camera lighting.
Was also going to buy a reflector 5-1 80 or 100 cm and a Sekonic lightflash meter model L 308 flashmate.
Will these be ok or am i barking up the wrong tree.Any ideas advice greatly appreicated thanks

Jason, there's no need for a light meter. Just use your screen on the bakc of the camera.

60cm is a very small umbrella. I'd go for one of these. You haven't mentioned what you're triggering with or light stands or what flash you have. Do you have all of these?

A reflector is a great addition, but unless you have a willing assistant you'll also need a reflector holder and another lightstand for it.

Yes 2 light stands and Yongnuo 1x trans. and 2x rec.1x Yongnuo Yn465 and 1x Yn460..
Was planing to use only 1 flash with umbrella and reflector to start with. Also thought could use the Yn460 bare as a rim light?
Have looked at reflector holders would e-bay versions be ok?
Will go for larger umbrella.
Light/flashmeter.I've read quite alot about using lightmeters to obtain the correct flash settings.Do you mean check image in play back or the meter readings from the camera?
Does a light/flashmeter give you all the settings eg f,iso, shutter speed and if using a flash the flash settings? As it will be 1st attempt with a flash would a light/flashmeter make it easier and quicker to get decent results or am i better doing trial and error?
thanks

You have asked a LOT of questions there. The very best thing you can do is go to strobist.com and read through and really study the lighting101 section and then lighting 102. If you still have to ask these questions go back and read it again and do the lessons. It's all very easy and intuitive once you get going and you'll see you don't need to spend money on a light meter. Have fun!

You don't need to buy expensive reflector holders.
You can make them quite cheaply.
Take a look at this:

You can download the low res PDF Tinker Tubes Personal Lighting Systems by Dean Collins for free.

Without getting into the light meter debate, I think you will find it very helpful.
The Sekonic 308 is a good choice.

You might want to look at Strobist.com on Flickr. Lots of useful advice there.
