No
I'm thinking of buying my wife a Kindle for Christmas, she suffers from arthritis so holding a book can be quite painful for her. Are they worth the money and do they come with any free books.

I live in the UK

No free books, but you probably can side load books in other formats.

They are lighter than a book (especially a hardback), have similar appearance to paper, can adjust the text size.

Books cost around 20% less than the paper equivalent. In the US they have just launched a lending library at a cost of £50 a year, hopefully that will come to the UK.

Overall - yes they are worth it, my father in law at the age of 90 has just purchased an Acer tablet so he can read books using the kindle app on the backlit screen.

There are loads of free books - mostly classics and crime thrillers!

Well worth it and the £89 Kindle 4 is very light (may require a case to assist holding as quite 'slippy' and thin)

You can download classics free for the Kindle- my wife certainly has. My wife loves hers as its light and easy to carry around.

my mrs loves hers and has bought one for her mum and gran for crimbo lots of free books, you can also email it PDF etc which it converts to books. On holiday it's perfect because you don't have to lug heavy books. Look at the recon units to save £ they are all brand new as far as I can tell.

My mrs has one and loves it, only advice i would give is get the 3G one, that way you can down load a book any time anywhere.

I got one last christmas and its been great, so much so that I bought one for my mum as well for her birthday.

There are plenty of free books on amazon and also lots of bargains!

I would recommend a case for it, I have one which allows it to stand up which might also help your wife.

I'm sure you could probably get them off ebay as well!

another vote, love mine, and have converted the hubby who is also getting one, the beauty is you can try before you buy on amazon, by downloading a chapter first, i have bought loads of books for under a quid and haven't been dissapointed with any of them

One of the best purchases ever made. Once you have one you'll never look back.

Another vote for it here, as has been said hundreds of free books loads at silly money like 79p and 99p etc .. I have discovered loads of authors through the bargain books. I would recommend a case for it as well. I have a gelaskin on mine to pretty it up and a case :)

I have an iPad so could quite easily use that with the iBooks or kindle apps, but for book reading, the screen is too glossy, too bright and the device is too heavy.

The kindle e-ink screen and the whole kindle experience is the only way to read ebooks IMHO - I have the kindle keyboard and use it all the time.

Books can be found from a variety of places, not just the kindle store, and transferring them onto the device is a breeze.

Take a look at calibre ebook management software - it is great and free!

I think it's brilliant ,much easier to hold than a book.

I've had a Kindle 2 and 3 and I love them.

I like the fact it's as easy to hold with either left or right hand and still turn pages.

you can lay it flat on any surface and unlike a book it stays open, so no need to even hold it at times.

Also my dad loves his for the fact he can just increase text size when he doesn't have his glasses to hand or when reading in bed (for the same reason).

Same here. Kindle is the best option. It looks like your actually reading real book.

Kindle is a good bit of kit, but don't fall for buying the power supply (like I did). It's a bog-standard USB charger. £9 for that is an outrage.
