Oh this is terrible but it's the only shot I took this week that has anything to do with accommodation, I'm terrible for just snapping away at my wee boy so this is my attempt at trying to photograph different things and enjoy doing something for grown ups.

I'm a total novice, I've had my 500d since last May but have got into a winter rutt and haven't photographed anything except my son and even then I think it's been pretty bad.

This was taken with everything on Auto as Thomas was hurtling towards my precious camera. The flash is glaring, I managed to cut out the fluff on my carpet (blush), but there was the danger factor, train hurtling towards me remember? :help:

Even toys need shelter...

Hi Kimberley,

I like the idea

Maybe an off camera flash next time and a plain background to focus even more attention on Thomas.

Mark.

Love the idea but agree with Iphoto re: off camera flash!

great idea have to agree with the off camera flash remarks :)

Thanks everyone, yeah that flash is pretty bright lol!

The lighting in my house is horrendous, when I take pics without the flash everything comes out yellow and blurry, any tips for that?

I'm hoping to get some photos outside for this week's project, I have an idea in mind so fingers crossed it works.

ETA - I'm going to try it with the flash off and see how it goes, the wee one is asleep so it should be a calm experience.

You could always difuse the flash, either buy a dedicated flash diffuser or improvise with a DIY version. Have a search on the TP forums, plenty of info and ideas

Thanks Hippo I'll have a nosy around tomorrow at some point.

Okay I took it with no flash. Don't lie on a Thomas railtrack, it hurts your b.... ouch.

Slight difference LOL!

Hmmm - i'm being really nit picky now - but this seems to lack contrast and appears 'flat' - (but that might just be me!)

Oh I'm so new to this. I did cool it down because it was almost orange, perhaps I did too much? This half of our living room is bland, the other has a bright red wall, I was just thinking it needed some oomph earlier on lol. Any decorator tips ;-).

I appreciate the feedback, I've never shared my pics with people in the know.

lol please dont think i'm in the know - i'm still very much a learner myself!!!!

Feel free to take everything I say with a pinch of salt :D

Am wondering if it would have been better had you put a sheet or something behind it - so that the background was plain?

I've had a very quick play with this in Photoshop - let me know if you want me to take it down!

I did a levels adjustment then a curves adjustment, increased the vibrance / saturation everso slighty (+3) cloned a bit of the blown highlights from the face then selected the face and did another levels tweak to add a bit of contrast and finally played with the colour under the bridge as the carpet had a red tinge.

Oh that's great thanks, don't delete it :). Do you know on my iPhone it looks spookily like the original before I messed about with it lol. I'll compare later on the laptop.

I just found out that a pic of a rather handsome toad I took and sent to our local paper last year has been printed in it. I was almost ready for giving up as my confidence is so low just now but that's spurring me on.

Eta- I'm not complaining about critique when I say my confidence is low. It has been for a wee while. This place is helping lots too.

Hey that's fantastic news well done :)

I know the problem of low confidence - it sometimes seems everyone else is so much better doesn't it!

When I'm getting really unconfident I look back on some photos I used to take - and look at how much I have improved - and remember most other people have been doing it a darn sight longer than I have!

Thanks Sarah, you're totally right, everyone else is better but then again everyone else has been doing this longer, even a few weeks will make a difference (I'm hoping).

I feel like my old pics were better but then again it was summer when I got my camera, there was lots more light, it's the indoors ones that are stumping me. I'm going to order my flashgun this week and that'll hopefully improve things.

Anyhoo, here is this week's pic, I am cheating because I've been so busy this week I havent managed to do anything. I was decorating the bathroom and tried to get a photo of the paint dripping off the brush for the theme of new but it just wasn't working at all. So here is a photo I took in May last year of some Butternut Squash plants my son and I were growing. I was trying to get a photo of all the wee hairs and new growth, it took me ages lol.

Hiya Kimberley

Just found your thread...theres so many to look through !
Thomas the tank engine is great ,can't help but smile at it & yet another great interpretation of the theme

Your 2nd shot is just great ,you seem to have got the emphasis on the hairs as you wanted so a success there  Maybe just a tad to light though thats just my preference .

& your'e right .It does tend to knock your confidence a touch when you see others shots & it feels like everyone else is better but keep going .Like you said - look back & see how far you've come in a short space of time:clap:
I feel the same but realise its a flamin big learning curve & we gotta start somewhere
Keep going & good luck for the next 50 shots:)

Well, that's factually wrong, have you seen mine..:'(

I saw a similar photograph to this a few months ago, a really tight crop and it works really well for me. I'd like to see a better focus and possibly a b&w version.

Thomas photographs, the later ones, are great. Love the colours, he really looks like he's communicating with the viewer...:cuckoo: and made me smile.

Cheers.

I had no idea I had more replies on this thread, I haven't taken any photos recently due to ill health but will hopefully catch up soon. It's nothing serious, I have arthritis and have been changing medications and exhausted as a result. Still browsing though.

Thank you so much for the feedback, Lynn, Andy & Dan, it took me ages to get the shot with the hairs all showing, I never even thought to put it on manual, the thought terrified me but after trying some water droplets the other week it wasn't nearly so scary! I have invested in a flashgun and a tripod so there should be no stopping me now.

Anyway I'll head off for now and have a nosy at all of your 52s and see what I'm up against :)
