Interesting shot, Keri. I think it'd work better with the labels lined up.

Not had too much time at hand of late, hence going AWOL towards the end of the 2009 52, but thought I;d make myself post something up, even if it isn't the greatest shot - used the wrong aperture (should have been somewhere around F8 to F11, and got a few blown highlights. Still, better than nothing!!! :)

...or maybe in landscape format...

Hi Keri.

I wondered where you'd got to on the 2009 52 !!!!

 Really creative and inventive set-up - looks like someone had a good Christmas and New Year
I definitely prefer the portrait layout, the landscape one just doesn't look quite right to me for some reason. I love the composition in this and the portrait version just seems to work so much better.

The blown highlights really don't bother me all that much, and I like the different colours in the glass. My biggest niggle is the reflections in the glass. I'm just finding them a bit distracting. I'd kind of like the labels aligned too (sorry, I know that's really fussy! But I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with OCD)

another interesting interpretation
one of the bottles is all black - might be nice to let its label show as well?

Another vote for the portrait view, and also agree with the labels being straight, if it was supposed to be a random display I would not expect them lined up so neatly so imo the labels should not be so random either. Just my thoughts :) Besides I want to see it it's vintage or Sainsbuy's

It's got an nice interlocking look to it, if all the labels were of the same type though i think it would have a more desired look to it.

Thanks for the comments all. If I get the chance (in daylight) I'll try and have a re-shoot before the re-cycling bin gets emptied. It was deliberate-ish to have the labels not all facing, as the reflections help (in my eye) to accentuate the curved aspect of the bottles, but it wasn't wholly thought out before taking the shots, I must admit.

@CGeezer, there's a right old mixture of stuff there actually - Taitinger and Moet at one end, and Supermarket Cava at the other. Must remember to invite a higher class of guest next New Year!! :)

Glad that the bottles are empty, you shouldn't lie bottles of champagne down!

I like it Keri. The curves are clear and the interlocking bottles work well.

Unfortunately the snow meant I didn't get the chance to re-shoot this with the labels aligned...will have to empty another load of champagne (and cava, and fizzy wine) bottles for that one!!

On to week two....

Well, despite my love of reading (nothing too high brow, mind you!) and my extensive music (CD) collection, I really am left cold with poetry - always have been, and suspect I always will be. I've tried to come up with some form of inspiration over the last week, but couldn't really come up with anything 'different', so have gone with something pretty mundane. What I've tried to do is make sure that the shot needed little or no PP (bar the border, obviously), and that the books at least related to the poem itself. Other than that, it was all a bit meh this week. Roll on Week 3!!

Books
Author Unknown

I like books
I really do.
Books with stories
And pictures, too.

Books of birds
And things that grow.
Books of people
We should know.

Books of animals
And places, too.
I like books
I really do!

I was just messing about putting the text in the border. Having done this earlier, I now think it is far too busy for the shot. I also contemplated on adding a splash of colour (e.g. the orange bind of the middle back book), but thought it would take away from the subject matter. Think it also looks better in LARGE. Other than all that, I'm really happy with it! :bonk:

Like the portrait version best and fits the theme but my OCD is showing too :(

Lighting and Dof good and I like the reflections on the bottles

Poem though is outstanding. Great poem and great representation of it :clap::clap:

but take the writing off the border

Life's so tough sometimes isn't it ?

Well done on week 2 .
Perfect fit for the poem and it really does work well - especially when seen at full size.

I agree with you about losing /toning down the border, but other than that it all fits together perfectly. Nice focus on the text and I like the arrangement of books in the background.

I like both Week 1 and 2. Prefer the landscape format for Week 1, it seems to accentuate the curves. Week 2 is great as well, has a real 'bookworm' feel to it.

Nice start! I'm finding it hard to keep up with everyone this year. So many newcomers! I'm a bit overwhelmed by it all

Week 1 is a good shot for what you said is "better than nothing". I think you over complicated it though. Feels a bit tight for space. What may have worked a bit better is 1 bottle and maybe just photographed one side of the neck... or something like that.

Week 2, now I really like this one. The books at the back feel scattered but when you look at them they are organised. It works really well in a clever way.

:plusone: I keep losing people! Anyway, Hi from me - you were missed at the end of 2009, so it's good to see you back - and on form.

Week1: This brings back memories for me of trying to do 'Ten Green Bottles' last year, and I'm pleased to see you're equally dedicated to your art - all those empties! :D I also remember bottles are infernally difficult to photograph and in fact I like what you've done with this shot (portrait). I don't mind the lables not lining up and I do like the reflections in some of them because it emphasises the shapes - afterall, the theme was Curved.

Week 2: Yep - good poem, well illustrated. I like the composition, and mono treatment, but not keen on the text on the border (sorry). But that's what the 52's all about - trying out new things. :)

Here's the shot for Week 3 then...'chopped'. Inspiration lacking at first, and was racking my brain cell (singluar) to come up with something a bit different on the chopped veg theme. This is what I came up with - it's still chopped veg, but it's the image that has been chopped, not the veg itself! Clever, eh? Oh, okay then...:( ha ha!

Anyway, I really should have figured out how to do this the easy way, rather than the manual intensive way I have done it - hence why it's a day late. Quite pleased with the overall effect in the end. I kept the original image as simple as possible so that the end image did not become too busy or mis-leading.

It's another of mine which is probably better off seen in larger format. Oh, and I've kept the border a bit quieter this time around.

My wife now officially believes I am certificable, where as before she just worried a bit...:cuckoo:

I like this a lot and it reminds me of a game we used to have where you had to move all the pieces around to eventually create the picture. There was only one empty space so it could take a long time to solve.:clap::clap:

Love the entry for 'chopped!' works really well

Phil

great idea, and very different approach on the theme this week,

well done

Wow - this is so clever! Chopped veg with style. I love it, Keri.:clap::clap:

Yep - the border is better too. And I would have no idea how to achieve this effect either your way or whatever the other way is. I hope you show your wife all the praise so she can change her mind about your certifiable status.! :D

I had one of those, too - and loved hating it - or hated loving it, depending on whether I could solve it or not!!!

I'm still trying to catch up with all the threads.

Curves: interlocking bottles is well done, even though it makes me feel a bit woozy just looking at it! :D

Poetry: fits the theme well with a nice arrangement of books. I agree about the border being a bit too busy.

Chopped: imaginative treatment of the veg theme - I really like it!

:clap::clap:

Ditto. I used to love those puzzles.
I want to start moving the pieces around now to try to "solve" it.

It took me a while to get my head around this.
At first glance I thought it was just a selection of different veg shots, but after actually reading what you said, it clicked straight away with the puzzle connection. A very clever take on chopping veg

My only suggestion would be to make that plain white square black (or maybe just add some drop shadows around the edges so that it looks like a blank square) so that it looks even more like one of those slidey puzzle thingies.

Very good Keri... I used to hate these puzzles though... I like it and it fits the theme.

It's difficult finding the time to do anything requiring daylight of late, so it was a case of a quick walk around Tewkesbury at lunchtime for a few shots. Had a few more obvious 'street' shots, but liked this one, despite the softness to the image (too slow shutter speed). Restricted myself to using the 85mm F1.8 lens I've just bought off kennysarmy, even though I'm still learning it's capabilities - a suprisingly steep learning curve.

Looks better larger, which seems to be a recurring theme for me at the moment.

Only processed in DPP and border added in Flickr.

Second choice would have been this:

Off to see whether everyone else was more succesful than me this week...

EDIT : Comment was made about seeing the second image in b/w, so I've done an edit:

Actually, I now prefer that one, so I'm going to change it!!!

very clever sir...

I like the first one, but it doesn't really say street, more canal :D... The second fits the bill, but... the large shadow of the leaf on the back, I find a bit distracting.

Of the two... I prefer the first.

I absolutely love the first one
OK, there's a bit of the old crowbar in evidence but at a stretch it could still portray a "street".
Lovely tranquil shot, beautifully balanced composition and just enough proximity to the man in the chair to make him the main focal point.

The second one definitely says "street" more, but I'm just not liking it as much as an image

#1 for me, and street can be anything outdoors according to the wiki definition.

Like the composition too :clap::clap:

Catching up :)

Curved:

Portrait for me - nicely thought out and I like the fact that the sky can be seen in the reflection :)

Poem:

OOOh good poem and a nice image - crisp B&Ws (and an Iain Banks book! Very good :))

Chopped:

Thats bloody clever - chopped (or maybe processed) veg! Original and cleverly done

Street:

The B&W couple shot is great :) I have no idea why B&W works better than colour but it does here! Nicely seen and taken!

Really like chopped! What a cracker of an idea.

As for street. Really nicely done. The couple walking away shouldn't work, but it does, and I can't put my finger on why! Nicely done again!

I prefer the B+W version of the people walking too.. I had a canal in my street shot.. saw it as a play on words.. 'canal street' is a well known area in manchester :)

nice idea for chopped and very nicely done.. does my head in trying to put 3 images together, never mind that many ;)

Both good - B/W is definitely the way to go with both of them. I can't make up my mind which I prefer...

Thanks for the positive comments...especially regarding 'chopped'. Glad the hard work was worthwhile! I still can't work out which 'street' shot is better, so I'll leave them be, and maybe come back to them in a few weeks. Thanks again. :)
