I have bought a canon 350D camera that comes with tripod, batteries and a 18-55mm lens. It is in very good condition along with the lens. I have noticed people advising to upgrade the lens for a newer 18-55mm. What makes the newer lens better over the older ? Not sure I'll notice the difference.

I have one of the original 18-55 non IS kit lenses on my old 350D, I took this shot back in the Autumn, so it is quite capable of producing excellent images, Whilst good glass is always recommended, don't get obsessive about it.

I bought a 400d recently, and immediately bought the newer lens. It has better glass and image stabilisation. I bought the IS version for £50 and sold the non IS version for £40, so effectively cost me a tenner! :)

I'm not going to focus to much on parts. If see a newer lens cheap,I'll take one. How do you tell a newer lens from older version ?

Yes you will get better quality if you upgrade but if you are happy with the results you are getting then don't bother, once you find the lens or body are limiting you that is the time to upgrade

Just go for the IS version. They're much better than the non IS imo

stick to that and you will be fine. If you current camera and lens if giving you the images you require then no need to look at any other lenses.
There will always be better lenses and better cameras (up to a very expensive point anyway) but if you don't need them don't worry.

I've got the same lens as you for my 400D and it's perfectly usable. If you want a better lens then I'd save up for a much better one.

But if you want to know the difference:
EFS 18-55 is the original
EFS 18-55 IS replaced it, has image stabilisation (probably not really needed on this lens, but doesn't hurt). Generally felt to have better image quality than the original.
EFS 18-55 IS II latest version. Again reviews suggest an improvement on image quality.

I used the 18-55 for about 2 years before I upgraded to a better lens, and the images are fine apart from noticeable distortion at the edges of the field. You can always crop those bits out though.

Thanks for the advice guys. Camera should arrive tommorrow so look forward to getting out and testing it.
