Last year was his first year in Moto GP. He won the championship.

This year he has won 6 out of 6 races, despite suffering a broken leg a few weeks before the first race.

In race 5 he was forced off the track on lap 1. He re-joined the race in 10th. place, but took the lead with 16 laps to go.

Is he a one off phenomenon?

It looks like Lorenzo may have got it back together again, Rossi is snapping at his heals in the championship and still he's winning and smiling. So he is very good, but he will only be great if he carries on for a few years yet. If he does 3 or 4 years at the top he won't be a great such as Rossi, Doohan or riders who won, lost and came again, so for me it's a bit too early to tell.

Young Marc is extremely good and he comes across as a genuinely good guy too.
he seems to have had a calming effect on all the riders behaviour, the podiums are noticeably more friendly.

I think Marquez is the real deal. I know sweet FA about the nuances of motorbike racing but I did watch him in 125s a few years ago. In one race - was it from Estoril or Jerez? - he was about 10th on the grid and outbraked and wiggled around four guys in the first corner on cold tyres, and then got another couple round the rest of the first lap! And it looked like pure talent to me, not hooky, extra-warmed tyres ... and the guys he was passing were all hungry, world-class Junior psychos, not snails!

How good - very good :)

Last weekends race showed he can really race, rather than doing a Vetel and only winning from the front...He's come on so far from the beginning of last year when he was dropping it, but he finds grip and does things with a bike that us near mortals could only dream about....

And the things he and the other riders do with a bike is unreal at times

Cheers for the responses folks. Glad it's not just me who thinks he really might be a bit special.

Of course, it's early days to call him a great but he does seem to have raised the bar.

I'd love to see if he could master the Ducati.

I beg his pardon for the spelling error.

In his press calls he comes across like an enthusiastic, smiley puppy.

What's not to like?

It would be good if stoner came back and joined Honda, he might have someone to race then, I only get to watch highlights when I catch them on itv 4 this year so I haven't seen a lot.

He's amazing... and doesn't seem big headed with it. He is a pleasure to watch and maybe too good because with the exception of last race MotoGP has got boring. Not to take anything away from that but I wonder if the Yamahas bike are just not good enough to win this year.

I also think if they'd gone for Crutchlow over Rossi they'd be doing better - remember Crutchlow was beating Rossi on a Tech3. Rossi had his days, let someone else try. But of coarse Yamaha prefer another Spaniard over Crutchlow for Rossi's ride. Seems no matter how good Crutchlow is he's just not Spanish or Italian.

Rossi sells bikes Crutchlow doesn't. Unfortunate that it comes down to that but we can see a similar example in F1 with Maldonado. He's in for the money he brings with him and they are prepared to overlook the fact that he's a liability in the car.

You have only got to look at the tracks to see the Yellow 46 branded fans to realise what a great commercial asset Rossi is to Yamaha.

As to Marc Marquez he appears to be the real deal, Pedrosa on the same Honda is being blown away.

Yeh I get the sales thing with Rossi. We are starting to see a lot more orange though ;)

Marquez has just come through the ranks on upto date bikes, including 600cc Moto2 bikes, not 250 strokers. This must help him and couple with raw talent the guy is just shy of godlike.

Rossi is the same age as me and when I think what he has accomplished in this time it boggles the mind. I think the next generation of MotoGP fans will look at Marquez like mine has with Rossi, but without having to suffer all the crap at the end of the race done by his fanclub. ;)

I know that Rossi is at the tail end of his career and Marquez is an awesome rider. Will be very difficult to beat but there are other brilliant young riders in Moto 2 & 3 waiting for their chance. Whether he will be spoken of in the same light as Rossi in years to come I don't know. For those of us who saw Rossi in the 500 stroker era we were watching a talent that possibly will never be surpassed.
