Last thursday i was suffering stomach pains ( i actually though maybe trapped wind but very servere ) and my OH took my to Farnborough Princess Royal A and E.
got seen pretty quick and became clear they thought it more serious.
to the point that i was in the theatre and under the knife friday morning.
turns out i had a perforated bowel and huge amount of infection that pretty much had gone on another 24 hours would have killed me.
They removed about 12-18 inches of bowel and i now have a Stoma and have to use a bag for several months until i get the reversal op once all healed.
Throw in an 8 inch would with about 30 staples in it and as you can imagine the past 8 days have been hell.
all this means i can do no heavy ( or even light ) lifting for at least 10-12 weeks which is going to have rather an affect on my photography with it pretty much being limited to shooting still life stuff indoors as i cant even carry just the camera and lens around.
Still im alive and thats the main thing that counts

Sorry to hear of your predicament but good job it was discovered and dealt with promptly - I wish you a swift and complete recovery :)

Sorry to hear that Dean, but if it helps, this type of temporary stoma is very effective and is successfully reversed in time.

Take it easy and don't do anything strenuous as it hampers healing. Perhaps (if funds allow) a Sony RX100 or similar would allow you to get out and about a bit?

GWS :)

many thanks for replies .. sadly no budget for any type of camera ( other than maybe a box brownie ! )

Hope you recover quickly Dean.

This happened to a friend of mine. He has since had the reversal operation and is fine. When he was in hospital for the reversal I thought he might like some light reading so bought him this :D

You might like to add that book to your reading list.

Good luck,
Ken

Blimey...you've been through it! !
Take it easy and best wishes for a speedy and uncomplicated recovery.

Ouch!!! Sounds like a close call.

Having had 2 heart attacks I know how it is to have several months recuperation periods and to be limited in activities you are keen on. Health is more important than hobbies, interests or employment. Take yer time and recover well.

What Brash said! I was close to busting my guts a few years back but they managed to deal with the problem without surgery. Still have to be a little careful with diet but manage to just add more veg to meals rather than cut down too much on meat. (What brought the acute diverticulitis on was a steak meal followed by a bowl of popcorn... Not a particularly balanced diet!)

Important thing is to get yourself back to fighting fit before trying to do too much. If you're not already 100% familiar with the functions and controls of your camera, plonk yourself down in a comfy chair with the manual and the camera (on a beanbag tray perhaps?)

many thanks for replies.. no idea what brought mine on. i tend to eat pretty healthy. rarely drink, always a good mix of the usual fibre, protein, greens and all the rest of it . quit smoking almost a year ago too.
Because i had a huge rupture and loads of infection that cam on all of a sudden it had most likely been sitting unoticed for quite some time but without any warning signs and i ended up having the Hartmann procedure performed which took around 4 hours+ so pretty intense and traumatic for someone whos last hosptial visit was 40 years ago for an eye op!.
i would say lets just hope its another 40 year gap but i of course know i'll be back in sometime in the next year or less for the reversal process once all has healed up.
in mean time just taking it one very small step each day.

Best wishes for a full & speedy recovery :)

I was going to be flippant, but decided against it. Stick around you annoying, aggravating, puerile, asinine, pathetic useless piece of dung.
