I've just been checking my bank account online and saw a transaction on there on 7th November for a payment of £800 to a credit card company who I don't have a card with

I phoned the bank straight away and I have to say, they were brilliant. She gave me all the details of the transaction, date, exact time etc. (turns out it was an internet payment to the credit card company) and asked me to confirm that I hadn't made the transaction. She stopped my card immediately and said they will send me the necessary form to fill in. As soon as they get it back they'll put the money back in my account. She even offered me a temporary free overdraft until the money is refunded too. Kinda restored my faith in the system a little!

It's really scary though, it's the sort of thing that you think always happens to someone else. I guess today I was that someone else

The lady at the bank said the most likely way someone got my card details is a card skimmer on an ATM somewhere. I did use an ATM at a motorway services a few weeks ago, one of those portable ones that charges you a fee for the cash withdrawl - if that was the culprit then that's a hell of a fee!!!

Happened to my ex. She had four charges on her credit card, turned out they all originated in Sweden. First one was for a few pence, then a few pounds. They were obviously testing the water with those two.

The other two were significantly larger, totalling almost £3,000.

Sorry to hear that mate. Nice to hear the banks were on the ball and on your side, so to speak.

A while ago you would have been accused of fraud but it's that common now the banks know it happens, and are less suspicious of the account holder (I think).

Like you say, you always think 'It always happens to someone else'. Not nice when it hits home. Hope you get it sorted soon mate.

Sounds very much like it could have been a card reader in that portable ATM.

I never ever use them as a rule, and I'm always usually wary about where I use my card. I've started to use cash a bit more sometimes now too. (Don't trust alot of petrol stations either). I also religiously check my accounts every day or two, to keep ontop of things.

I'd also advise checking your other cards and accounts to be sure.

Are you sure you didnt purchase a new lens late at night, possibly while drunk?

LOL Joe
I wouldn't mind so much if I had some L glass to show for it!

i had around £200 taken off my bank account a couple of years ago, bank were top draw about it though, very swiftly resolved

Some right b'stards around ... sorry to hear that m8 (and anyone else who has suffered such a s***ty trick) ... ... to them all :shake:

Just shows it pays to check your account very regularly ...and so in detail ...

:p

About a year or so ago my wife got a phone call that went along the lines of:
- Is that Mrs "oldigt"
- Er yes what is it you are selling. (Normally at this point the phone goes down with a thud).
- Nothing. This is LLoydsTSB we've noticed a possible discrepancy in your account. Would you mind please confirming your details..
- Yes I would! (i.e. you can b****r off, I wasnt born yesterday)
- Please call your bank.
...
Thinks... and phones bank to call center.
...
- ... follows the normal login procedure via phone banking.
- Yes that was almost certainly one of our operatives trying to contact you.
(at this point go a little weak at the knees)
- oohh OK why.
- We were just wondering if you had been to Sweeden recently.
- No never, how recently out of interest.
- Last Wednesday.
- Hmmm was in work all day (as per normal).

Apparently someone had managed to clone the details on her card and gone on a shoppin spree in several sweedish department stores.

Anyway the bank were really good about it. No missing cash. Nice new cards and no messing.

Scary, but a good result.

I had a letter a couple of weeks ago from MBNA advising me of my new pIN number. I thought that was very nice of them as I didn't have a credit card with them. After a long conversation with them it appears some one managed to apply for a card in my name. Luckily the card got deleivered to me so I was able to cut it in half.

What really annoys me though, is banks such as MBNA send through applications pre-filled out, so all you need to do is sign. Makes it easy for anyone to get hold of your details

Meanwhile my credit reference now permantly shows I have applied for an MBNA card, which

Getting your money back is all well and good, but are the b**tards that do this ever caught?

Scary stuff!
I guess this is where having no money & no overdraft comes in slightly handy

Probably not :annoyed: Makes you mad doesn't it!

This has got me thinking actually.....from my point of view there's no harm done really apart from the inconvenience of having my debit card stopped and having to wait for a new one. The bank are going to give me back my £800 in about a week so that's that. But where does that £800 come from? Do the bank just cough it up? If so that must cost them millions each year. Or does the retailer / organisation who accepted the fraudulant payment have to foot the bill? In which case that's pretty harsh on them. Regardless, as GfK says, I bet the theiving b*****ds hardly ever get caught :bat:

I read something last year that said Retailers were protected against fraud provided they had used the chip and pin system. If theyw ere still accepting the old signature then they were on their own.

Judging by the interest rates that a bank gives us, we probably pay for mistakes / fraud.

i had the twice on an MBNA card, both times they resolved it :)

one of the transactions was an online bet which won :) gits took the 4.90 winnings too :suspect:

:)

Almost happened to me with my EGG card

Top people at egg have systems in place to prevent it appreantly the had a request for 57p on my card they called me to verify I had made that purchase I said no, payment was blocked and card cancelled had a new card in 2 days. Top people.

my parents had visa call them up enquiring whether they had just bought several sports cars down in brighton...erm, no! stopped that then. and shortly after returning from holiday my bank called to check I had just spent x amount on a hotel in italy, which I had (wonder what would have happened if I'd said no...free holiday?) - my bank's good like that - checks when it should to make sure all customers are happy :)

I would say under these circumstances your wife did the right thing ! I would hang up and then call my bank straight back ! at least you know the number you are talking too !

I have done similar myself, told the caller to prove who they are first ! ;) lol

I had a call from Mastercard last Saturday after I purchased:
1) Lenses worth USD1500 from BHPhotoVideo, NY
2) LowePro bag USD145 from some Ebayer in Colorado
3) Lens hoods from Amazon.com
4) Train ticket from Waterbeach station

They were a bit worried. :) Rightly so.

Just noticed a 1p charge on my Egg card that I don't recognise so I've just sent a secure message to Egg Customer Services to query the transaction.

Just had a phone call from smile - they wanted to make sure a couple of transactions that had gone through this afternoon were mine.

I havent used the credit card properly for a few months - I use my new one with the new cashback thingy on it instead and just used the gold card to pay for the wildarena stuff last week. There were a few transactions for online internet betting sites - I told her the last time I had used it was when I paid for wild arena and she said the transactions must be fraudulent.

Can't work out how they've gotten the details, especially with me not using the card for ages, unless its from receipts - but all receipts nowadays all have things blanked out.

Unless its from a petrol station payment i made months ago or something.

hmmmmm

at least they spotted it and stopped my card quickly enough, must have been bloody big deposit amounts.

I'm very wary of social engineering scams and I only gave her two numbers out of my secure number to log on, from that she could tell me about transactions, that my wife had a card too and that she'd stop it etc, the number wasnt withheld and I rang it back, its an internal smile number so all is well - she asked me if i was okay talking to her about it on the phone and she had a liverpudlian accent - i know thats where they are based.

I logged on afterwards and saw my credit card account has indeed been removed from my online screen.

I just can't bloody work out where they've skimmed it, or lifted the details......hmmm

Like you said, at least they spotted the fraudulant transactions and stopped your card. It's worrying though, how they get your card details, esp if you haven't even been using it  . I still don't know how mine got used, I'm just assuming that the card got skimmed at a cash point at a motorway services  B*****ds :annoyed:
