I've just been checking my bank account online and saw a transaction on there on 7th November for a payment of £800 to a credit card company who I don't have a card with
I phoned the bank straight away and I have to say, they were brilliant. She gave me all the details of the transaction, date, exact time etc. (turns out it was an internet payment to the credit card company) and asked me to confirm that I hadn't made the transaction. She stopped my card immediately and said they will send me the necessary form to fill in. As soon as they get it back they'll put the money back in my account. She even offered me a temporary free overdraft until the money is refunded too. Kinda restored my faith in the system a little!
It's really scary though, it's the sort of thing that you think always happens to someone else. I guess today I was that someone else
The lady at the bank said the most likely way someone got my card details is a card skimmer on an ATM somewhere. I did use an ATM at a motorway services a few weeks ago, one of those portable ones that charges you a fee for the cash withdrawl - if that was the culprit then that's a hell of a fee!!!
