what would be the best setting to use on this flash first time flash user will be part shooting wedding this weekend

If you dont know your way around then P mode on the Cam and full auto on the flash (ETTL) and leave the head at 90degrees pointing forwards. It then behaves just like a HUGEly powerful popup flash.

Past that its a learning game...
If you take the flash head and tilt it or rotate it then it will not auto zoom (to match the lens setting) you'll have to do that yourself, or change the flash compensation (cam or flash). It does largely depend on what you are pointing the flash at, how far away it is, how big the space you want to light and the colour/reflectiveness of the objects in the scene.

Note though that you'll need to pull out the built in diffuser if you are down at 17mm.
If you do this then make sure that it is properly clicked back in when you are finished otherwise the ETTL flash zoom doesnt (it stays at 17mm).

1 - Get yourself a Stofen diffuser.
2 - Put the flash in high speed sync mode, and shoot with the camera in AV mode outside. This will give you great fill in flash shots in daylight.
3 - Set your ISO at around 200 or 400 if its a dull day.
4 - Inside set the camera to Manual mode at 1/250th sec with The AV at f2.8 - f8.
5 - The camera and flash will take care of everything for you, but if it's dark inside set the flash ex comp to plus 2.

if i could not get a Stofen diffuser today would the settings still be ok papa

Go into custom functions 3 and set to flash sync (fixed). This will ensure your camera will keep up with the flash. Then if you shoot on Tv the shutter speed will stay at 1/250 and change the aperture as needed.
My prefered method is to put on manual, meter for the background (sky) and set, then aim the center focus point at the subject (face usualy) press the star button on the back (it will fire a flash). Recompose keeping your finger on the star button and take the picture. Thats the method I use during the day. In the evening I set on Av and let the flash make the exposure (still using the back button for correct exposure on the face).
An example is attached taken with a sunset in the background.

the setting im after are for av mode if u can help please

I use Av mode, but only at night. During the day if you set say f4 the shutter speed would be 1/250 (without high speed sync) and possibly over expose.

PapaLazarou has the best advice for Av mode, outside during the day.

Best to get the hang of one method then try the next, and so on.
