Hi,

Just picked up my 30d this afternoon. After the few short hours of ownership so far I have found it to be a well built, solid feeling camera. I like the weight of the camera and the fact its physically bigger than my 350d. In a way it kind of makes my 350d feel like a "toy camera". The larger screen on the back is excellent as is the slightly larger, brighter viewfinder. Just a couple of things I would like to know.

1. I'm already thinking I need the bg-e2 battery grip after finding it a little fiddly to shoot some portrait style shots. How much of a difference in size and weight does this make to the 30d?

2. Are all you 30d owners that have purchased extra batteries for your camera using genuine canon ones or aftermarket ones? (I purchased some hama batteries for my 350d and found them pretty good but just wondering whats best for the 30d)

3. does anyone know if you can run the 350d canon software alongside the 30d software, or does it have to be one or the other?

thanks

Anthony

1. A great difference. Granted it's not as huge a difference as the grip is to the 350D, but it really does make a difference, I certainly find it much more comfortable in my hand with the grip, especially when shooting portrait shots. My advice is, if you feel like you might benefit from it, get one.

2. I'm using the aftermarket batteries. I got mine from ebay, for about £7 (Just like I did with my 350D).

3. No idea I'm afraid, I haven't ever installed any software for my cameras. Which software are you referring to. Canon DPP pro is it? Or something like that. If so, I'm sure it works with both cameras? (So the one version is needed).

Congrats on a mighty fine purchase

The grip i got on the same day as the 30d, never used without, i think its a very nice weight and well ballanced with my lens,

Batteries i have 2 Canon, got the second one free, and 2 from here

I got some from there for my 350d, never needed more then 2 for a whole 3 day race weekend 6hrs with the camera on as well as pic browsing to.

How do you 350 software? the DDP? if so no the 30d raw format is different, you'l need to install the new software, but you'll still be able to use the 350d.

If you visit canon, they have download for windows to that allows the CR2 raw files to display the same as j-peg,tiff's etc.

Thanks, yeah its the supplied software cd that came with the camera Marcel.

Re the 350D software I've not updated my Zoombrowser software from what came with the 350D when I got my 30D. All works perfectly on both cameras using the same version - both cds had the same version number so didn't see any point re-installing.

1. I have not used a grip to say.

2. I bought 2 batteries for about £10 from 7dayshop.com. Much cheaper and they last longer on a charge than Canon's ones too. Would definitely recommend them. The only downsides are they are silver coloured and that because they last longer they spend a long time with one bar missing on the LCD display, during which period the camera will not let you use sensor cleaning mode as it thinks they are about to die.

3. The software is the same, you just need to make sure the version you are running is recent enough to support the 30D raw format.

Michael.

No grip (yet) so no idea

After market battery's and no problems at all, last longer than Canon at they are 1800mAh and Canons are 1390mAh

I'd download the latest version of DPP 3.0.1.5 it's free so what have you got to lose.

The battery grip on my 20D makes it stand pretty much the same height as the ID so it's a substantial increase in bulk, but for me it makes the camera much more comfortable to hold and I like a heavy camera anyway. The grip taking two batteries gives you a greatly increased amount of shutter time too.

I have the original Canon battery and a cheapo aftermarket one I bought off e-bay and it's at least as good, if not better than the Canon one.

I had a grip on my 300d and my 20d and found both cameras handling was improved, especially if you had a long / heavy lens on.

As soon as I can find one for a decent price, I'll be sticking one on my 5d.

Each time I got a grip I got a compat battery from 7day, both were actually higher capacity than the Canon item and gave performance on par with the more expensive genuine item.

If you're using the camera for long periods of time with a larger lens on it then the grip is indispensible IMO. Makes the camera much better balanced and reduces the strain on your fingers also as you have a larger area to hold onto.

Re batteries - I've used the 7 day shop "two for a tenner" ones with both DSLR's I've owned and find them superb - much better than the Canon one that came with the 30D!

Grip here too, well worth the money. The 7dayshop batteries don't seem to last as long as they did in my 300d but at 2 for a tenner I'll just buy more :)
