Hi guys A close friend just gave me a canon Lens. It is a 24-70mm 1:2.8 L USM.

Could you tell me what the value is and if it is compatable to a canon 500d. Ive been looking at the prices and Im shocked, but I aint sure Im looking it up properly as it looks very expensive.
 
Yup, it's expensive and yup it'll fit your camera.

I've just looked on a few dealers web sites and spotted a few for sale in the region of about £900+.

Why would your friend:
(a) pay £1500 for a lens which was never more than about £1100 to buy new;
(b) give it to you?
I'm sorry, but I smell BS.
 
BS? I have just given my friend a 40d with a lens. That's what friends may sometimes do.

I've often given away stuff I have no further use for, regardless of value. Sometimes friends do that sort of thing, you know. Try it sometime ... It makes you feel good to help people out ....
 
I once gave a lens to a GF but it was only a Canon 17-85mm, not a great lens and maybe that's why we aren't together any more :D
 
MY son is my friend, you should see the truck load of stuff I've given him, you know what? I've enjoyed giving it to him. I even bought a guitar off him then gave it back to him straight away, I couldnt play a note :-)
