...if I were to sell my Canon 30d, 10-22mm Canon and 17-55IS Canon, all in almost unused nick, what sort of money would I raise, and what lenses could I buy to fit my 5D, which currently only has a 50mm F1.4 and a 70-200F4 IS to go with it ?
I ask as the 30d and 17-55 seem to get used most of the time when going out and about, and I can't afford to keep 2 cameras, so selling the 30d and funding more lenses for the 5D seems like a good idea.
What you got to tell me ?

I'd keep the 30D but dispose of the EF-S lenses to get something that's compatible with both bodies. Having the crop body in the arsenal gives you two options for each lens and financially that's better than buying a lens with the proceeds....it's also generally more useful for macro.

sell the lot and get a 17-40L plus some change, add that to your 50mm and you 70-200 and you've got some pretty decent coverage.

I think a 5D deserves better than a 17-40.......that should liven the thread up a little.

You can't say that without recomending something superior ;)

If you don't want the super wide element I suppose a 24-70mm f2.8 L would be a very viable option on the full frame and within budget if all three bits of old kit get flogged.

Looking at Steve's gallery then I'd say an 85L or 135L would be a move in the right direction. I was against the 24-70 because the 5D can excel with low light / shallow DOF subjects and I think f/4 is too slow to get moody shots (in general).

I did have a 24-105 before I got the 5D, and sold it as I found it too slow, so the 24-70 f2.8 sounds like a possible, but I also find the 17-55 on the 30d to short at times (making it roughly a 24-70 on the 5D) - is there not anything else that maybe covers the 30-120mm range..?
Bob - my gallery is not very representative of most of my pictures, which tend to be people and natural light, but you are right about moody and low light.
I do need a zoom, though have always hankered after an 85mm, but not the 1.2 version...
Now, if only I wasn't being so tempted by a 100mm macro.......
As for second bodies - mine is so wonderful, my wife has no need for anything more..

Maybe the 85/1.8 and 135/2.8 then....the 5D gives its own shallow DOF advantage. As for the 100 macro...that needn't be a permanent fixture in your kit bag.

Seems like the Sigma 24-60 might be worth a look, from what is being said in another thread..
Maybe with an 85/1.8 and a 135/2.8 to accompany it..

Never had a Sigma - do they feel nice to the touch ?
How sad is that last line - I meant to say do they feel well built and solid-ish ?
 
I love my 85mm 1.8 on the 5D Steve, tbh I think I could live with just that & the 70-200mm 2.8.

Think I probably need to get out my 17-40 & 100mm macro, and see if I can learn to like them a bit more.
 
Inaglo - you and Carole have been trying to get me to buy an 85/1.8 for ages, and maybe, just maybe I will soon (just for you, you realise..)
