Hi guys,

just need help with something that is really starting to peck my head a little.

When I shoot on a white background I use the refine tool to pull the subject off the background and usually it works fine. I move the cursor around the edge of the subject and when I release it usually does a great job of selecting hair/clothing etc. Sometimes it makes a couple of mistakes with skin but nothing I can't correct with the mask.

I've been trying to edit today and it seems to be playing up and just smudging the shot. I know I've probably not ticked a box somewhere but after half an hour I've given up - help!!

You could try resetting all settings/preferences as a first step I suppose....

If Photoshop is already open on your screen, close out of it. Then hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option on your keyboard and start Photoshop back up. The very first thing you'll see is a dialog box that pops up asking if you want to delete the existing Preferences file (which it calls the "Settings" file.

Tried but nothing came up when I restarted it

Sorry, got it off the net and have just tried it on my own - it brings up the scratch disk preferences for me!!

I've just tried to replicate your problem, and the only way I get close is by using far too big a brush, but it's nothing like as defined as what you have... :thinking:
 
Using that method you need to hit those 3 keys simultaniously when the PS flash log shows, to soon or to late and it don't work.

A easier way is to hold the keys down and start PS up using the the Start menu, that should do it.:)
