can anyone recommend a junk mail filter that will help to reduce the influx of crap into my inbox, im sick of being told i have a small penis, that i need to take viagra, during which ill also need a cheap copy of cs2 and to enter my bank account details into this webform.

i use my own domain name and collect my email via microsoft outlook, ive attempted to set up rules but these fail to catch anything even when they meet all the criteria.

so im looking for a junkmail filter that is easy to set up and preferably free

thanks in advance

If its your own domain, do you have control panel access to the hosting space where you can set up the filters direct on the server? Its what I have done since my domain email started getting the odd spam mail coming through, and it seems ot be working so far.

<Insert joke of telling your wife to stop sending them then> :D

Seriously though, does your host not offer anything? Mine does as part of CPanel 10. Spamassassin and another one, they seem to work very very well.

I know a few that use this
http://www.mailwasher.net/
Free and supposed to be very good,
I don't, though. I do prefer to get my weekly dose of viagra, inflatable toys, and all the free gifts for signing up to what-ever. AND of course I like to be informed when my bank account has gone pear shaped and I need to re-enter my user name and password
So helpful these banks

So these aren't really my friends sending all these emails then?
Dos that explain why a lot of them aren't even addressed to me anyway?

I use this one - http://www.dmachoice.org/emps.html

works for telephone and snail mail as well. We don't get any sales calls, junk mail or junk post any more - it's great and if someone phones you can say some excuse like I'm with telephone preference service and this can cost you £5,000. - don't think it's true but they don't half get off the phone quick

lol suzie just tells me i have a tiny dinkle (she likes it) she doesnt need to go emailing me!

i used to get spam assasin, but now i get mailscanner which im unsure of settings and boxtrapper whcih doesnt even work

I use Thunderbird's junk mail combined with grey-listing from my domain host. I only get a couple of week (out of 10,000) slip through the filtering and into my inbox.

Not email related, but i signed up to the TPS after getting fed up of numerous (and usually from the same place) calls. Now I get zilch...its fab

On the email front, i used to use mailwasher, but found the results so-so...

I use spamassassin and on my personal account i have boxtrapper which only lets emails through for people who are in the list, everyone else just gets a bounced email :) I used to get 100 spams a day (no joke!) and now i get none :)

in my experience most spam filters are a bit rubbish. they still seem to let certain dodgy e-mails through, and then they filter out the odd important one.

I use Mail on the mac and i've set up a rule that puts all incoming mail in the junk folder, except anything from people in my address book or people that i have dealt with before.
I then check the junk folder once or twice a day to see if anything useful is in there.
I've been using this method for a couple of years and i wouldnt change a thing.

I also use spam cop. Its not for filtering out spam, but for reporting it automatically to the ISP that the spam comes from. It takes a bit of time to forward the raw source, but its a good way of actually catching these winkers.

been experimenting in outlook and i tried spam assassin for outlook which is a waste of space doesnt do anything at all!

also set up some more rules in outlook and again it catches maybe 1 or 2 emails which meet the rules but lets the majority through!

prevention is better than cure!

dont post your email as a mailto link on any site, as bots can pick that up.

Also, if you have a cpanel, then you should have a setting where you only accept emails that are directed to email addresses setup. So, if you a 'catch all' then anything sent to "randomemail@yourdomain.com" will get thru, even though you haven't made it. By turning 'catch all' off, then those emails wont go thru and will bounce. only emails sent to ones you have manually setup via the cpanel will work.

Most spammers now just have a list of domains, and a list of common names. The spambots just put them together, send the spam and hope for the best. I used to have an address gary@ and it just got spammed to high heaven. My new address kljasfpuenkljbvkdbfvisbdfhi@ gets nothing. Infact its gets nothing from anyone :) :)

I must say, though that i have started getting some spam that makes me laugh. Its almost the same thing every time, but with subtle differences:

I'm considering taking them out of my junk list and adding them to my personal top 10 friends list :)
