Hi all

Many of you, as I, probably attend or have attended a hobby camera club. If so, you've probably also entered the odd competition too

Judges are of course renowned as complete pillocks - I know I am one too - but what's the daftest comment you've had on your photos???

Here's a good one from an inter-club comp we had recently...

Image - almost a silhouette of mother & baby African elephant on safari, and taken as a close-up showing the tenderness of them together touching trunks - ahh

Judge commented - it's a bit dark, it'd have been better if you'd got up close with a large reflector

Yep - he actually said that - he recommended approaching wild elephants with a large reflector to add fill-light! I mean, surely you'd have used a flashgun instead? So much easier to get on the plane - LOL

Tell him you value his c&c and would it be possible for him to demonstrate.;)

I had something along the lines of(regarding one of my insect macros); "You should have used a tripod. You need to use a tripod for all your shots, otherwise they won't get any better." Id like to see him use a tripod for all insect macros out in the field. Oh, and the image was perfectly sharp, so im not sure why he saw the need.

Judging pics is sometimes a really horrid thing to do. I've done a few comps and best of year things for my local club and always find myself getting really nervous before hand.

There are still so many people that tend to take a judges opinion as having more weight than anyone elses. Yeah, I know it's the only opinion that counts for placing but that's not what photography should be about.

I've probably said some really daft stuff but I cant remember anything specific. I do have a little rule for myself though, that if I do see something technical that could be improved to give the snapper better control over what they take, I'll always try and find at least two things that I really like to say about the shot to go with it. It's very brave to put pics up for public comment and the passion and enthusiam are far more important than image content/quality. I hear so many stories that suggest may judges forget this.

And for some reason, when I judge it always seems to be people that don't normally place well that go home with the prizes.

One of my clubmates had entered a shot of a flower in the quartely competition, the judge suggested that the light source was too close to the subject, Peter turned to me and said "well it was lit by sunlight, how the &*$% am I going to move that back"

 great comeback!

Also love the elephant caption too.
