Apologies if you think I'm dim. :)

Shooting horses moving

When I was using my 40d, I always shot in raw as the number of cf cards I have was adequate.

However, since getting my 7d, obviously, the number of images I can take on one cf card has reduced considerably. For instance, 4GB Extreme III - jpegs, 600, Raw, 155 or thereabouts.

For you sports people do you shoot jpeg or raw? and if raw, do you find you have to be quite disciplined in the shots you take?

I don't really want to fork out for any more cards at the moment so am I going to have to stick to jpegs for most of the action shots?

I'll be shooting horses over a six day period and downloading them to an external hard drive at the end of each day.

Any tips etc?:)

i always shoot RAW personally (and i recently changed my partners body to do the same).

thing is with equestrian it can be quite fast paced so in the space of time that you can change your settings to cope with changing lighting something important may have happened. i use RAW so i have a little bit of working room with exposure in post production.

i use 8gb sandisk ultra cards in the 1dmk3, (£20 from 7dayshop) and find i get about 500 shots on each depending on settings.
 
It all depends on how much pp you intend to do. I always shoot RAW because I make lots of mistakes :( but if you just need a quick tweak then go for JPEGS.
eventually u will have to treat yourself to more cards but check Amazon first because they have some great offers daily.

Thanks for the replies, I'm no where near the perfect photographer. LOL! So yes, I do make a lot of mistakes. I much prefer raw.

I think I'll have to get some more cards in. Thanks for the the advice on the 8bg, I've got two of those. Think I might have to get some more. The only thing is, my husband has banned me from buying any more gear...... :lol::lol:

your asking should you shoot raw or jpg based on how much space they take?

if you need to shoot raw then get more cards

if you dont need to shoot raw then dont..

shooting raw shouldnt be about space.. ever.
 
I always shoot RAW, admittedly I use 8GB cards, but I think not having so much room on your card, teaches you good discipline to stop firing of shots that are unnecessary.
But also as Neil said, give you a bit of room for iffy exposures :)

Thanks, I've psyched myself up to be more disciplined and not keep firing them off. :)

Kipax, I always shoot raw so I can get more out of the shots. I've just done a quick add up of the cards and I reckon I should be able to get around 2500shots in raw with the cards I've got.

sort of on the same lines as Kipax here, if you want to shoot Raw and have the time to process them then shoot Raw and buy extra cards, they are cheap.
 
Thanks for the replies peeps.

The glow plug light on my car is flashing and there was a dip in power. So taking that in to the garage tomorrow. Knowing my luck, it'll be a major problem:eek::( so CF cards are the least of my worries now.:thumbsdown:

I've got to get the car sorted for my trip.:)

I agree with Kipax and Gary aswell.

Sometimes there is no need to shoot in RAW but others there is, aslong as you have space, time and patience when processing then its upto you which option is best for your needs
 
On a typical eventing day (first class 9.30, last class 2pm - junior), typically how many photos do you all take?
 
That will depend on how many GeeGee's there are and how many fences that I can shoot a single nag going over. Not an easy one to answer...a bit like how long's a piece of string?

last class 2pm? blimey i wish :lol:

generally a 9am-6pm affiliated dressage comp we can come home with anything up to 1500 shots.

but as said it depends on the amount of competitors, weather, level of competition.. etc etc.
 
Ok, so until today, I had no idea :lol:

Finished about 4pm. Am now absolutely knackered but have learnt so much today

I had the "minimus" riders so not too fast. 5 classes in total. Plus had a go at the jump competition

It was a small show but has given me the taste for more!

I shot in jpeg as I was asked to.
 
If you like any sort of Equestrian Lisa see if there is a local Heavy Horse Assoc near you they are great fun to shoot.
Just spent a w/end with my club.
 
RAW is for computer people.

Jpegs are for camera people.
 
I shoot jpeg for the simple reason that for the price I sell prints at I don't have the time to flaff about processing them.

Just had a look at a card I used for showjumping outside a few weeks back. There are 1154 images on it, the other card has been formatted but from memory I had just over 2000 for the day.

If we take showjumping as an example. Let's say you can cover 4 jumps in the ring from the one position. If you take 2-3 shots per rider per jump, lets say 10 shots per rider, that's 1000 shots for every 100 riders. Plus a few candids, scary and oops moments you can see how they add up if there is a large entry.

You could always moderate that by calling them carp instead! :D
 
What is shooting Raw? ive heard about it but no idea.
Is it an easier option?:cool:
 
Thanks for all the replies. I should get the diagnosis on my car on Friday......:eek::'(

I have got quite a few CF cards and a friend of mine (who only shoots landscapes) was absolutely speechless when I showed him all my cf cards and exclaimed 'I don't think I've got enough to shoot raw all the time for my trip'. :lol:

I'm going to do a mixture, some will be jpegs and some will be raw. I'm also going to make an effort to not 'snap, snap away' like I normally do. I'm taking my laptop and external hard drives so can download the pics each evening.:thumbs:
