JPEGs from those massive megapixel Samsung cameras?

Yes
My daughter is having to upgrade from her Samsung A5 because of a broken screen (not worth repairing according to the local phone guys). We're probably sticking with Samsung because they support MicroSD cards; she takes a LOT of photos. I've noticed that all the current A series phones have 49 Mpixel or up cameras. Does this result in much larger JPEGs? I've been suggesting staying away from them as her storage would fill up that much faster, but maybe I'm misunderstanding things. For example, would there be an option to "down-rate" the phone to maybe 12 Mpixel, which is all she'd need for her social media use?

(Her insurance company is offering her an A8 as a replacement, which looks like a nice phone but nearly 3 years old now, I think...)

The "high" res files are quite large but still full of s***. That is the marketing idea to fill up the storage as fast as possible and flog you a new larger memory device.

At least on Xiaomi you can select different, smaller sizes and I guess that would be app dependent. The more clever way would be to transfer them out on a regular basis and clear the phone storage. Even better - get dedicated proper tool; I guess its only a matter time till it becomes too evident.

Might be out of your budget, but the Sony Xperia 1 ii has 12mp sensors, shoots raw, and has an sd card slot.
It also has a dedicated camera app with full manual control and a dedicated physical shutter button With half press. Can shoot at 20fps in jpg mode and also has class leading autofocus Including animal and person eye tracking.

Another option is the slightly smaller and cheaper Sony Xperia 5 ii.

I hadn’t heard about it until recently, which is hugely annoying as I just replaced my smashed Samsung note 10 plus with a Oneplus 8 pro. If I’d have known About the Sony then, I’d have bought that instead.

Thanks everyone. She eventually went with the A8 which is being delivered via us today. Meanwhile her old A5 is sitting downstairs, supposedly with no SIM or SD card, beeping away furiously as it gets notifications, presumable WhatsApp and FB messages via our wifi! I do hope they have proper facilities for wiping old phones in this insurance company, although as it's the semi-defunct Phones4U insurance, I rather doubt it!

What I _should_ have done was ask on here for advice on phones with microSD slots. That would have opened up our choices quite a bit. The alternative to the A8 was a new A21s, but that has a 48 Mp camera (plus 3 others) and appears to be a very budget phone.

A hammer will ensure the old phone is wiped. [emoji6]

A factory reset will help however, if it will allow that.

Tried the factory reset, couldn't find a way to do it with no screen to work with. At least that would make it tricky (though clearly not impossible) for crims to steal the remaining pictures of her training runs!

OK, I will ask: what phone options other than Samsun and the Sony Experia still have a microSD slot?

Xaiomi certainly do, at least for some models.

This site has a good comparison tool where you can (e.g.) select features like 'card slot' and find all the phones that have it and were released in a particular year:
There are several things I use a lot (like card slot, 3.5mm jack, magnetic compass sensor and FM radio) that now seem to be unfashionable - not many flagship phones have the first two, though they are often in the same company's mid-range models.
