Jpeg images with layers?

Came across something strange today...

Got a jpg image which has an post camera edit to it, its not my photo so I never had the original.

Strange thing is that when I view it as a thumbnail in explorer (win XP SP2 btw) I can see the unedited version. When I use "filmstrip" the big version shows the edited one. If I open it in any graphics tool whatsoever, I see the edited one.

Its not my pic so I cannot post it here, but this has baffled me

The thumbnail is an added piece of information, it probably wasn't overwritten, or it came with the 'thumbs.db' in the same folder - a similar situation with the thumbnail info..

No, I definitely only got the actual jpg - it was emailed to me. Or do you mean the thumbnail is actually inside the file itself? I always thought the software (explorer/Photoshop/whatever) generated the thumbnails itself?

I might try moving the file to another folder (its at home and I am at work at the mo) and see if it stays the same.

Yes, the file will sometimes contain the thumbnail information too.
