I'm assuming that elements 6 has updated and done this but I was wondering if anyone could explain the differences between a jpeg and a jpeg 2000 type file.
As I said I,m assuming the update of elements has done this or it could be something to do with the file starting off as a raw file from my D70?

its not worth the effort. Nobody uses/supports it as far as I'm aware.
