Hi all,

I'm John from Liverpool and I recently joined Talk Photography to see what's what. I've finally taken the plunge and will be taking delivery of a shiny new Canon 500D next week. Hope I made the right choice as it had some rather sterling reviews! :)

Looking forward to getting the new camera and trying to figure out how the thing works!

hi and welcome
i made the change from good bridge cameras...olympus/panasonic
to a dslr...screaming and biting all the way
you can makes as many mistakes on the big stuff as you can on little 'un's
so dont think the camera will sort it out for you
i found with the dslr you have to change your thinking regarding dof and shutter speeds...its heavier and vibrates a bit
good luck with that cool piece of body and hope you get a lens to suit
cheers
geof

Thanks Geoff,

I've been using Ultrazoom cameras for years and while the massive zoom is nice to have, the image quality has always been a bugbear of mine so SLR was the way to go.

I will confess to knowing nothing about Depth of Field and shutter speeds so it's gonna be a steep learning curve - but I'll enjoy the journey as I'm keen on snapping photos whenever I'm out and about. For now I'll be sticking with the stock 18-55mm lens until I learn a few basics then it'll be time to delve into the expensive arena of lenses!

:welcome: to TP, John

Once you get your new camera have a read through some of the stuff in the Talk Basics section, where just about every beginner's question you can think of has been asked and answered!

Hi

Welcome! I also started off with the 500D after some point n shoots/bridges.

I think its a great camera for the price. I added some lenses and kit listed in my sig. soon after buying the cam and signing up here.

I also agree with the Talk Basics for advice.. The knowledge, advice and skill on here is second to none IMO.

TBH, I don't think there is a better forum as a whole online:clap:
