Yes
Anyone know?
I've a silly idea of doing star trails with this in the foreground. I'd prefer it to be lit up. If it's lit is it every night or only when they are working?

Won't a 30 second exposure at high iso enough to light the telescope ?

Yes it might. If I'm doing trails then the 200 or so shots could well light the telescope enough for my purposes.
Next clear night...
Chris, Mr Perceptive. Fancy sitting in a car with me for two hours? In the cold. And dark. Down a country lane?

Biggest problem you will have is if it moves!

Sure will mate, any evening you like. I'll even scout out a couple of locations on Thursday afternoon if you like.
That's fine. Might be short notice when the skies are clear. Long term forecast is for this cold to continue until March so there are good chances of clear skies.

I'd be up for it, but work is a bit manic at the moment, from memory, it's quite difficult to get a clear view, and as has been pointed out, it moves, so could be facing in a different direction, so finding a suitable viewing point may be tricky.

I don't mind it moving on it's axis. Could give a frozen motion feel to the shot. A good viewpoint is the main thing. Let's see what Chris comes up with on Thursday.

I'm going to do some scouting for good locations. I've Google mapped the area and there looks to be a few promising locations.

If you look on the life link I posted it looks like the Lovell dish is in fact lit up at night so might add some interest.

Thanks Chris. I'll try anything. Skies have gone cloudy and it looks like it might be that way all this week. But just the lit up bowl either moving or still is worth having a bash at.

You really know how to live life to the full, don't you?
No timings set yet, how are you for next week?

I cant do this week, have two days in not so sunny Northampton and two days in even less sunny Swindon!!!
Don't suppose you work for a certain building society?
I pass the telescope weekly and on occasions it is lit. It was the other night but when I put the TV on when I got home they were doing a TV program from there. There is also a nice farm building/house that is lit up. Have tried to photograph it but nothing spectacular.

Nah mate I worked for a retail IT company as an engineer

Every time I look at that link I see a different picture. Just now it does look like IR. This morning it was in daylight but yesterday it was in colour. I'm confused - again.

If it's in colour it's deffo daylight, if it's dark it will be greying even the trees, but as of now the trees look white so very much a hint to IR floodlighting.

I've got an IR converted 40D but no Canon lenses until a 40mm pancake appears in the classifieds.

If the dish moves just turn it into a time lapse rather than stacking for star trails;)

Yes I'd thought of that but suspect t dish will.move very slowly and erratically.
Everything is possible.

Fine by me. Just name the day.
I can pick you up if you like.

Mon/Tues best at the moment but we need a clear sky

No, I work in Industrial Automation (Machine Vision)

There are CCTV cameras that are colour by day and IR by night,

I have an IR converted X-E1, so have plenty of lenses, can't afford to buy any more, they will cost me a pint!!!

Have you seen the 'movie' called Timescapes by Tom Lowe? Some stunning lapses including the Very Large Array in America - all the dishes seem to be dancing in synchronisation:)
