Hmm, its salaries like that which make me glad that photography is my hobby/second job!

That said, if they threw in a 1Ds and some other toys, I'd be tempted - I like toys!

:( If it was more than I earn at the moment (which isn't all that much more) I might have been interested as it's not that far......

But can't really afford to drop too much lower than I'm on cos of mortgage

if this was posted in june next year i would be all over this!! shame i guess im going to miss out :-(

now if it was part time...

I'm sorry - but is that salary for a full time position? If so, that's pushing minimum wage...

I agree Fiona this seems a tad low for an experienced tog and it is over the minimum wage by quite a bit seems like the south has higher minimum wages:shrug:

Salary 14-19k? i'll get more than that doing a paperround.

If someone has had 2 years exsperience then why would they be going there?

There is no north / south divide with the minimum wage.
The current minimum wage for people 22 and over is £5.52 per hour and as of 1st Oct 08; it increases to £5.73 per hour.

The first Google hit I tried returned the above official figures.

£5.53 x 37.5 hour per week = £10,783.50 per annum.
We need to keep this in perspective and remember than not everyone has the skill set / experience to earn the so called average UK wage.
It doesn’t mean they are stupid in fact, far from it.
As I am not a professional photographer, I have no idea what the average wage is for this sector.
However, as they are also looking for someone who has skills using Photoshop, I would say the offered pay scale a bit of an insult.

Mmmm..IMHO the wages on offer are low, especially given the location as well...

I wonder whether you are required to use your own equipment as well?

Christ, some people have are very deloded regarding minium wage. I dont live too far away from there and can tell you that's about the average for the area, you'd be hard pushed to find much that pays alot more. The thing is that dosnt give you any idea on hours, company car, equipment supplied etc.

But that is too far below my earning levels to be interested, and i havent got the time for a part time job, as my current role is some time like having 2 jobs any-way.

Sometimes it feels like companies almost take advantage with the salary because they know that the actual job is someone's 'dream job'.

In this day and age I'm not sure how you could support a family/house on that if it's the main wage, as for me it wouldn't cover my car payments/petrol for the month! Scary........

Most photography jobs I've seen have been fairely low paying, but isnt that the way it generally goes with photography?

You sacrafice earnings to be doing something you enjoy? It seems the same with the media industry too. Atleast for the first few years.

I can't say I'm that surprised by the salary, photography is not awash with money and it's certainly not a game where you're going to get rich working for someone else.

I used to do a paper round that earned me £16 an hour.
If I 37 paper rounds a week, I'd be earning £30,000 a year.

Just in reply to techno-geek :)

£16.00 per hour Thats more than I'm on now and I've been working for 30 years (not solidly or I'd be really tired). Give me the name of the papershop.

What paper shop did you used to work for? and why the * don't you work for it now? :D

Apologies - my comment about this pushing minimum wage was premature as I sometimes forget that Londoners are paid higher wages than the rest of the country where living generally costs less.

I still feel, however, that this is a pretty poor salary for a professional photographer position.

i sometim es wonder where some people live if its not cloud cuckoo land........ i support a family and run a house on less than that. not only as the MAIN wage but as the ONLY wage.......... and so do the majority of people i know...........

im not sure what some folk are expecting... a person can study 3 years at uni to become a qualified nurse and not get those type of wages so why on earth would u expect that 2 years experience would earn u more?

I don't believe I live in Cloud cuckoo land, but as previous posters have commented, I do live on the South coast. FionaB, I notice that your location is central scotland. I won't pretend to be familiar with the property market up there but I'm willing to bet it is cheaper to live than down here. I didn't mean any offence with my last post, soz.

Just for comparisons sake, even in the 'rougher' areas down here you are not going to find a 2 bed property for less than £150k at rock bottom. A mortgage on that works out at circa £900 per month. The net monthly income on a 14k salary (not counting benefits etc) is £955. £55 left for bills, food etc.. Now that is impossible to live on.......

Just for a quick indication - Companies in the south midlands charge around £650 a day for commercial interior shoots. Full kit though, lighting, props, on site pc etc.
Sounds good but getting 5 days work a week through the doors could be problematic.
The company with the offer will make a lot out of each shoot but I suspect they won't be doing 5 days on site a week.
Whoever goes for this should ask polite but telling questions and push for future earning potential - could be good, could be bad.

I think its worth remembering something my father once told me

No matter what you earn your always going to be living just within or just beyond your means.

Over time I've felt that to be true, I'm a student at the moment so I'm pretty broke but last year I was in full time employment on the UK equiv of about 24k and I was still pretty broke.

If someone says this salary is low, its just low for them and their lifestyle, don't take it as a negative because I'm sure no-one would intend it that way.

Redsnapper makes an interesting point, I hadn't considered the inherent value in the position in supporting your career further on.

Still in cloud cucko land tbh mate, the housing prices where i am are very simular, i live by Gatwick, the average job sallery here is around £17-18K a year. Unless you can get a good shift on security or something up the airport. My parents need 2 jobs to be able to afford there morgage. House prices are way over most first time buyers wages, that one reason so many new builds are being stopped here at the moment as there is no market for them for first time buyers.

My mate runs his own estate agency has found the last few months very slow, the market is picking up again, but its investors again, not first time buyers.

Like I said, totally agree, can't see things getting much better in the future either. I also totally agree with hyakuhei, since I was 18 I've still ended up broke at the end of the month no matter how much I earnt! But that's also because of expensive hobbies like this one!

I certainly think more research needs to be done...It's easy to get carried away with the area in which you live, but you also need to factor in whether the use of camera equipment is provided and also CS3.

They are asking for proficiency in this program plus a couple of years experience togging, but also if you need to supply your own gear (a bit like car mechanics do with tools) then wear and tear needs to be factored in and you need to decide whether this salary is going to be enough to cover cost of living plus potential repairs to camera equipment, knowing how much they can cost...

I'd go for it! Is that job still available?! Has to be a million times better than what I'm doing right now - a tomato picker on £12 k/£14 k a year (depending on how crop price performs).
Unfortunately, even though it's in the same county as me, it will involve a bit of commuting and what with transport costs as they are I'll end up paying more to get there than what I'll be earning!

Err.... Band 5 qualified nurses start on £20,225 and can progress to the heady heights of £26,123 after 9 pay point increases :(

Those pay points arn't automatic though, you have to prove you have developed new skills to earn them.

Our last few pay rises have been below the rate of inflation which reflects how much the government values nurses.

Ill admit a nurses wage on the scale of things isn't all that bad but does it reflect what we do?

I quite agree, didn't realise there was another nurse on the forum

I have to say none of you ie, nurses, police, fire, ambulance get paid enough for the shifts you do, plus all the studying and training and knowledge that you have.

You are awesome and I have the utmost respect for you

For fear of taking the post off topic - Ruth - not at all. My Mum has been a nurse since the late 70's and a theatre nurse for the majority of here time and sometimes what shehas to go throug, no money would pay for that. If it wasn't for people like you, Ruth, my Mum and all the other nurses, doctors, ambulance staff, hospital staff, paramedics, fire crews etc etc, well...........

A big :clap::clap::clap::clap: to everything you all do and no, you are not paid enough

I couldn't do it and there's probably plenty who couldn't too. So hats off to you all

They're offering crap wages for that job because EVERYONE is a photographer!

Oh and not the "awwwww nurses" argument again with wages please!!!
